Biography

Short Description

Saint Contardo of Este, known in Italian as Contardo d'Este, was a thirteenth-century nobleman of the House of Este who is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Ferrara in 1216. The Este were then establishing themselves as the dominant family in Ferrara and as important players in the Guelph politics of northern Italy. Almost nothing that can be independently verified is known of Contardo’s childhood or education. Later hagiographical tradition, written well after his death, portrays him as a young man who, despite his rank, felt called to evangelical poverty and to a life of pilgrimage rather than to the military, marital, and political career that an Este of his generation would normally have followed.

As an adult Contardo left Ferrara and undertook the pilgrimage to the shrine of the apostle James at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, one of the principal penitential journeys of medieval Latin Christendom. He is described as traveling in the guise of a poor pilgrim, without the escort or display that his birth would have permitted. On the return from Spain he crossed Lombardy. At Broni, a town in the Oltrepò Pavese south of the Po, he fell ill. He died there on 16 April 1249 and was buried locally. He was in his early thirties.

A cult of sanctity formed around his tomb in Broni within a relatively short time. The townspeople attributed miracles, especially healings, to his intercession and came to regard him as their patron. His relics have remained in Broni, where a church dedicated to him—the Santuario di San Contardo—became the center of his veneration. The Catholic Church recognizes this ancient cult; his liturgical feast is observed on 16 April. No papal bull of canonization from the medieval or early modern period is known, and he belongs to the large number of locally venerated thirteenth-century figures whose sanctity was accepted by custom rather than by a formal process in Rome.

Contardo is remembered as a lay pilgrim and penitent, not as a member of a religious order, a bishop, or a pope. No marriage and no children are recorded in the tradition concerning him. Because the surviving accounts are late and shaped by hagiography, many particulars of his motives, his route, and the exact circumstances of his last days cannot be confirmed from contemporary documents. The elements that historical and liturgical tradition consistently preserve are his origin in the Este family of Ferrara, his pilgrimage toward Compostela, and his death and burial at Broni in 1249, after which he became, and has remained, the patron saint of that town.
