Biography

Short Description

Saint Damian the Healer, also called Damian the Presbyter of the Kiev Caves, was an eleventh-century hieromonk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in Kiev, the principal monastery of Kievan Rus'. He is numbered among the Venerable Fathers whose relics rest in the Near Caves of that lavra. The chief source for his life is the Kiev Caves Paterikon, a collection of monastic narratives compiled in the thirteenth century from earlier tradition. According to that account, Damian received the monastic tonsure at the Caves and was a disciple of Saint Theodosius of the Caves, abbot of the community and one of its founders. He was ordained priest and remained in the monastery for the rest of his life.

The Paterikon describes Damian as a strict faster, humble, and constant in prayer. His particular ministry was the care of the sick. When monks or lay people fell ill, he would visit them, offer prayer, and anoint them with oil; recoveries were attributed to this ministry, and later Slavic tradition therefore styled him the Healer. He is said to have bound himself by a vow to remain in the monastery serving God until death. No reliable information survives about his family, place of birth, or life before he entered the Caves.

The Paterikon gives a comparatively full account of his last hours. As Damian lay dying he was visited by Abbot Theodosius. Distressed, Damian recalled his vow and feared he had not kept it. Theodosius comforted him. Damian then beheld a vision of angels who, according to the narrative, promised him the Kingdom of Heaven because he had fulfilled his promise to serve God to the end. He died in peace while Theodosius was still living; later liturgical calendars assign the year 1071 to his death. Theodosius himself died in 1074. Damian was buried in the Near Caves, also known as the Caves of Saint Anthony, at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Veneration of Damian belongs to the wider cult of the Kiev Caves Fathers. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 28 September and on 5 October, the latter date being the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Near Caves, and again on the Second Sunday of Great Lent with all the monks of the Caves. He was a priest-monk, not a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and he lived in monastic celibacy. Beyond the Paterikon’s portrait of his healing ministry and blessed death, the historical record is sparse; later menologia repeat that portrait without adding independently verifiable biographical detail.
