Biography

Short Description

Saint Erentrude (also Erentraud, Ehrentraud, or Latin Erendrudis) was a Benedictine nun and abbess of the early eighth century, remembered as the first abbess of Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg. Medieval tradition identifies her as a close relative of Saint Rupert of Salzburg, most often as his niece. Rupert, previously associated with Worms on the Rhine, was invited by Duke Theodo of Bavaria to preach and to organize church life in the Bavarian duchy. After founding a monastery for men at the site of the later St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, he summoned Erentrude from the Rhineland to head a community of women, so that the new ecclesiastical center would include both a male and a female house.

The women's monastery was established on the Nonnberg, a hill above the Salzach that had earlier been occupied by a late Roman fortification. The foundation is generally placed in the second decade of the eighth century, often around 712 to 714. Erentrude became its first abbess. The community followed monastic custom of the Benedictine type promoted by Rupert. Nonnberg Abbey is regarded as the oldest nunnery in the German-speaking world to have existed continuously from the early Middle Ages to the present. As abbess she would have directed the nuns' spiritual formation, the liturgical life of the house, and the administration of its property, in a period when such monasteries also served as centers of Christianization and of education for women of the Bavarian elite.

According to the received chronology she died on 30 June 718 and was buried at Nonnberg. Her tomb and relics remained at the abbey and became the focus of a local cult. The present abbey church, rebuilt in later centuries, still houses her shrine. Her principal feast is 30 June; a commemoration of the translation of her relics has been kept on 4 September. She is honored as a virgin saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Because she lived long before the later centralized papal process of canonization, her recognition rests on ancient liturgical veneration rather than on a formal decree by a named pope. In the tradition of Salzburg she is associated with Saints Rupert and Virgil as a patron of that church and city.

Independent contemporary evidence for her life is scarce. No charter or letter in her name is known, and the account of her kinship with Rupert and of her summons from Worms derives from the early medieval lives of Rupert and from the institutional memory of Nonnberg rather than from documents of her own day. Historians therefore treat the outline of her career as consistent with the foundation of the Salzburg monasteries, while regarding her birth, childhood, and inner life as unrecoverable in detail. What remains reasonably secure is her place as first abbess of Nonnberg, her death in the early eighth century, and the continuous veneration of her memory in Salzburg from the Middle Ages onward.
