Biography

Short Description

Saint Eucharius, known in French as Saint Euchaire, is venerated as the first bishop of Trier, the Roman city of Augusta Treverorum in the Moselle valley. According to a medieval legend that became standard in the Gesta Treverorum and in the hagiography of the region, he was numbered among the seventy-two disciples of Christ and was sent from Rome by the Apostle Peter to preach in Gaul. He travelled with two companions, Valerius, described as a deacon, and Maternus, described as a subdeacon. The legend recounts that Maternus died on the way, at Ehl near Strasbourg or at another station on the route, and that Eucharius returned to Rome, obtained the pastoral staff of Saint Peter, and with it restored Maternus to life. The three then resumed their mission. Eucharius is said to have founded the church of Trier and to have governed it as its first bishop; Valerius succeeded him in that see; Maternus is claimed as an early bishop of Cologne and of Tongeren.

No contemporary evidence confirms this story. The earliest bishop of Trier who is historically secure is Agricius, who attended the Council of Arles in 314. Episcopal lists that open with Eucharius, Valerius, and Maternus are medieval constructions, shaped by the ambition of a great imperial and ecclesiastical city to possess apostolic origins. Modern historians therefore treat Eucharius as a figure of local tradition rather than as a person whose career can be documented. It remains possible that a Christian community existed at Trier, then one of the foremost cities of the western empire, by the later third century, and that the names of Eucharius and his companions preserve a faint memory of early missionaries. The Petrine commission, the miracle of the staff, and the precise succession, however, belong to later legend.

Medieval catalogues of the bishops of Trier place Valerius immediately after Eucharius and Maternus third, after which the list runs through a series of poorly attested names until Agricius. Valerius is also honoured as a saint. The three missionaries were often represented together in the art of the Rhineland and the Moselle. A staff identified as that of Saint Peter, supposedly the instrument of Maternus’s resurrection, was long preserved among the treasures of Trier cathedral; its real origin is as uncertain as the rest of the cycle. These narratives served to bind the church of Trier to Rome and to the apostolic age, a claim of particular value when Trier was a late-antique imperial residence and, in the Middle Ages, the seat of a powerful archbishopric.

The cult of Eucharius was centred on a Benedictine monastery just south of Trier. The house was originally dedicated to him and was later renamed the Abbey of Saint Matthias after relics believed to be those of the apostle Matthias were brought there in the twelfth century. The abbey church still displays the traditional tombs of Eucharius and Valerius and remains a place of pilgrimage. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Eucharius on 8 December, repeating the traditional description of him as a disciple of Saint Peter and first bishop of Trier. No year of birth or death can be verified; figures such as a death about the middle of the third century are inferences from the legendary chronology, not facts drawn from contemporary records. Nothing reliable is known of his family, marriage, or membership in a religious order. He was neither pope nor patriarch. His sainthood rests on ancient local veneration and on medieval elaboration of Trier’s foundation legend, not on a formal canonization of the later papal type.
