Biography

Short Description

Saint Felim (Irish: Feidhlimidh; also rendered Feidlimid, Fedlimid, Fethlimidh, Felimy, or Phelim) was a Christian holy man of early medieval Ireland, traditionally placed in the sixth century. He is remembered as the patron saint of the Diocese of Kilmore in what is now County Cavan. Surviving notices of his life are sparse and late. They consist chiefly of entries in Irish martyrologies, the dedication of the church at Kilmore, and later diocesan tradition, rather than of a contemporary vita. As with many early Irish saints, almost nothing can be established about his parentage, education, or the precise course of his career from sources that meet a modern historical standard.

According to long-standing local tradition, Felim lived as a hermit or monastic founder at Kilmore (Irish Cill Mhór, meaning the great church) in the kingdom of Bréifne. The place-name and the later cathedrals on the site are the principal witnesses to a cult centered there. He is sometimes styled a bishop in later ecclesiastical writing, but the territorial Diocese of Kilmore was organized only in the twelfth century, and early Irish bishops often exercised office within a monastic or familial church rather than a later-style diocese. Claims that he belonged to a Munster royal kindred appear in genealogical and hagiographical tradition; such pedigrees are common in Irish saints' lives and cannot be independently verified.

Felim's feast is recorded on 9 August in medieval Irish calendars, including the Martyrology of Gorman and the Martyrology of Donegal, which commemorate Feidhlimidh of Cill Mór. The Roman Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Kilmore and the Church of Ireland cathedral at Kilmore (St Fethlimidh's Cathedral) both bear his name, attesting to a continuous local cult from the medieval period into modern times. He should not be confused with other early medieval figures of similar name, notably Feidlimid mac Crimthainn, a ninth-century king of Munster who was also a cleric and who is occasionally treated as a saint in later lists.

Because no early Life of Felim survives, historians cannot reconstruct a detailed biography. The sixth-century date, the association with Kilmore in County Cavan, a hermit or church-founder role, and the 9 August feast constitute the core of what the martyrological and local record will support. His veneration remains primarily diocesan and regional rather than universal, and he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization process of the later medieval or modern type.
