Biography

Short Description

Saint Ferjus, known in Latin as Ferreolus, was a bishop of Grenoble in the Dauphiné of southeastern Gaul during the Merovingian period. He belongs to the seventh century, when the Frankish church was organized around royal authority and local episcopal sees that combined pastoral, judicial, and civic functions. Contemporary documentation for the bishops of Grenoble in this era is extremely thin. His name and the memory of his death survive chiefly through later diocesan catalogues, liturgical observance, and local tradition rather than through letters, charters, or narrative sources written in his own lifetime.

In the traditional succession of the see of Grenoble he is often counted as the eighteenth bishop and is placed in the mid-seventh century. The date most frequently given for his death in diocesan histories and hagiographical compilations is 659, sometimes presented as approximate. He is remembered as a martyr. Early texts do not record the precise circumstances of the killing. Later pious accounts, of uncertain historical value, claim that he was assassinated in connection with his pastoral office, including versions in which a man whom he had rebuked for an immoral life was responsible. Such stories are typical of medieval hagiography and cannot be treated as established fact. The site associated with his martyrdom and burial is the locality of La Tronche, immediately adjacent to Grenoble in the present department of Isère, where a church dedicated to him later stood.

The cult of Ferjus remained essentially local. The church and former parish of Saint-Ferjus at La Tronche became the centre of his veneration and the traditional resting place of relics attributed to him. His feast has been kept on 12 January in the calendar of the diocese of Grenoble. Like many saints of the early medieval West, he was honoured by popular and episcopal cult rather than by a formal papal process of canonization or beatification of the later medieval or modern type; no individual pope is recorded as having canonized or beatified him.

Almost nothing else about his life can be verified. No source of recognized historical authority records his year or place of birth, his family, his education, or membership in a religious order. There is no documentation of a spouse or of children. He did not hold the papacy or a patriarchal see. His historical significance is therefore that of an early bishop of Grenoble whose sparse outline was preserved by regional devotion and by the church that still bears his name at La Tronche.
