Biography

Short Description

Saint Fructus, known in Spanish as San Frutos, was a hermit of Visigothic Spain who became the principal patron saint of the city and diocese of Segovia. According to the traditional hagiography, he was born in Segovia to a wealthy noble family toward the end of the seventh century. He had a brother named Valentine (Valentin) and a sister named Engratia (Engracia). After the death of their parents, the three siblings distributed their inheritance among the poor and withdrew from secular life to live as hermits. Nothing reliable is known of an exact birth year, and the narrative of their noble origin and almsgiving belongs to medieval legend rather than to contemporary documentation.

They settled in the limestone gorges of the Duratón River, in the territory of what is now the province of Segovia. Fructus established himself in a cave overlooking a dramatic meander of the river, a site later occupied by the Romanesque hermitage that bears his name, in the present-day municipality of Carrascal del Río. Tradition holds that he lived there in prayer and austerity and died of natural causes in 715, in the first years of the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula that had begun in 711. His brother and sister, according to the same tradition, were put to death by Muslim forces and are therefore commemorated as martyrs. The historical kernel is simply that of an early medieval eremitical cult on the Duratón; the precise circumstances of the siblings’ deaths cannot be independently verified.

Later legend attributed miracles to Fructus both in life and after death. The best-known story attached to the site is that of the Cuchillada de San Frutos, a deep fissure in the rock near the hermitage. In the tale, when hostile men—variously identified as thieves or as Moorish raiders—came to harm the hermit, he traced a line on the ground or struck the rock, and the earth opened, swallowing his assailants or cutting them off. Such stories, typical of early medieval Spanish hagiography, served to explain striking features of the landscape and to underwrite the saint’s role as protector of Segovia.

Devotion to Fructus was firmly established by the twelfth century. In the 1120s Bishop Pedro de Agén of Segovia translated the relics of Fructus and of Valentine and Engratia from the Duratón hermitage to the cathedral of Segovia. A Benedictine priory dependent on the abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos was later founded at the hermitage. Fructus’s feast is kept on 25 October. He remains the patron of Segovia, and an annual pilgrimage is still made to the isolated hermitage of San Frutos in the Hoces del Río Duratón.
