Biography

Short Description

Saint Gaucherius, known in French as Gaucher d'Aureil and sometimes rendered Walter or Gaultier of Aureil, was a hermit and founder of canons regular in the Limousin during the later eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Traditional accounts place his birth at Meulan-sur-Seine in the Île-de-France, in the mid-eleventh century, in a family of some social standing. Precise documentation of his childhood and education does not survive; later hagiography presents him as pious from youth and as a man who eventually left home, gave away his goods, and sought a stricter life far from his native region. The setting of his vocation was the wider climate of Gregorian Reform, when eremitical experiments and new houses of regular canons multiplied across western France.

He settled in the wooded country of the Limousin, in the orbit of Limoges, and established a hermitage at Aureil in what is now the Haute-Vienne. Disciples gathered around him, and the hermitage developed into a priory of canons regular living under the Rule of Saint Augustine. Aureil became a recognized house in the diocese of Limoges, joining contemplative austerity to the communal recitation of the office that characterized regular canons. Gaucherius is remembered as a contemporary and associate of other Limousin reformers, above all Saint Stephen of Muret, founder of the Order of Grandmont. The sources portray him as austere in personal life, concerned for the poor, and occupied with the spiritual formation of the community he had gathered.

Beyond these outlines the historical record is thin. Dates often attached to the foundation of Aureil in the 1070s or 1080s come from later tradition rather than contemporary charters that can be cited with certainty, and many anecdotal details in popular saint-lives cannot be independently verified. What can be said with more confidence is that Aureil endured as a house of Augustinian canons and that Gaucherius’s reputation as founder and holy man was established locally in the twelfth century.

Traditional accounts give his death as 9 April 1140 at Aureil. Later legend adds that he died of injuries after a fall from a horse while returning from a journey connected with his monastic or pastoral duties; that story belongs to the hagiographical tradition and should be treated as such. He was buried at the priory. A cult formed at his tomb, and Catholic tradition holds that Pope Celestine III canonized him in 1194, in a period when papal canonization was becoming more regular though still unlike the later formal process. His feast is kept on 9 April. Outside local Limousin devotion and specialist hagiography he remains an obscure figure, and honest biography must distinguish the solid core—an eleventh-century Meulan-born hermit who founded Augustinian canons at Aureil and died in 1140—from the uncorroborated embellishments of later legend.
