Biography

Short Description

Saint Gens, also called Gens of Monteux or Saint Gens of Le Beaucet, was a Provençal Christian hermit whose life is traditionally placed in the early twelfth century. He is said to have been born about 1104 in Monteux, a town near Carpentras in what is now the Vaucluse department of southeastern France, at that time in the County of Provence. No contemporary charter or chronicle mentions him. The outline of his life depends on later hagiographical notices, the local liturgical cult, and a popular devotion that has continued in the region for centuries. Standard accounts describe him as the son of a modest rural family and as a youth of unusual piety.

His parents, according to the legend, wished him to marry. Gens refused, determined to belong only to God, and left Monteux for the hills. He took up the eremitical life in a cave in the broken, wooded country near the village of Le Beaucet, some distance to the south of his birthplace. There he lived in poverty and austerity, given to prayer, fasting, and penance. The best-known episode of his story is the visit of his mother, who sought him in the wilderness. Finding her exhausted and thirsty, he struck a rock with his staff and water sprang out. The spring is still shown at his sanctuary. Other traditions credit him with obtaining rainfall during drought, a reputation that later made him a saint invoked in dry years.

He died, according to the received date, on 16 May 1127, still a young man and still living at the hermitage. He was buried at the site of his cave. In the following generations a chapel was built there, and the place grew into the sanctuary of Saint-Gens, lying in a steep valley below Le Beaucet. The shrine comprises the chapel, the hermit's cave, and the fountain associated with the miracle of the rock. Relics attributed to him have been venerated at the sanctuary. The people of Monteux in particular adopted him as their own saint and maintained a regular pilgrimage to Le Beaucet.

That pilgrimage became especially important in times of drought. Processions from Monteux to the shrine of Saint Gens are recorded in the early modern and modern periods as a communal appeal for rain, and the custom has remained part of local religious culture. Gens was not the subject of a well-documented papal canonization of the kind that became standard in later centuries; his honour rests on popular acclaim and on recognition by the local church, as was common for hermit-saints of the high Middle Ages in rural Provence.

Saint Gens is the patron of Monteux and is closely linked with Le Beaucet. He is invoked for rain and against drought. His feast day is 16 May. The sanctuary continues to draw pilgrims. A careful reading of the evidence must underline how little can be verified independently: the years of birth and death, the details of the miracles, and even the precise course of his eremitical life are transmitted by tradition rather than by documents from his own lifetime. What is historically secure is the existence of a durable local cult, centred on a hermitage in the Vaucluse hills and on a saint remembered as a young man of Monteux who chose solitude and whose name has been bound for centuries to the hope of rain.
