Biography

Short Description

Saint George is among the most widely venerated saints in Christianity, yet almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary historical sources. He is generally understood as a Christian martyr of the later Roman Empire, associated in tradition with the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century. No reliable contemporary account of his trial or death survives. The earliest firm traces of his cult appear in the fifth and sixth centuries: churches dedicated to him are attested in the eastern Mediterranean, and a major shrine at Lydda (Lod) in Palestine became a center of pilgrimage. His name entered early martyrologies, and by the sixth century he was already a well-known intercessor. Later Greek and Latin Acts of Saint George, which describe elaborate tortures and miraculous restorations to life, were already regarded as fabulous by some medieval critics and cannot be used as a factual biography.

In the form of the legend that became standard, George was born into a Christian family of the eastern Roman world. Tradition often places his origin in Cappadocia and connects his mother with Lydda in Palestine; his father is sometimes named as a Roman army official. After his father’s death he is said to have been raised in Palestine and to have entered military service, rising to a position of rank in the imperial army. When edicts requiring sacrifice to the gods and the surrender of Christian books were issued, the legend presents George as publicly refusing compliance, tearing down imperial decrees, and confessing Christ before the emperor or his officials. He is then subjected to a sequence of tortures—including the wheel, molten lead, and other torments that vary by recension—before being beheaded. Western accounts have often located the martyrdom at Nicomedia; eastern tradition more commonly places it at Lydda. His relics were associated with the church at Lydda, which remained the principal locus of his cult in the Holy Land.

The episode for which George is most famous in later art and folklore, the slaying of a dragon, is a medieval development rather than part of the early martyr acts. Versions of a dragon-combat story attached to George circulated in the East and reached Latin Europe in the high Middle Ages; they were given wide currency by Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend in the thirteenth century. In that narrative, a city (often called Silene in Libya, or identified with Beirut or other Levantine sites) is terrorized by a dragon that must be appeased with livestock and finally with human victims, including a princess. George, depicted as a knight, wounds or kills the dragon, converts the people, and asks as his reward that they receive baptism. The story fused the soldier-martyr with the ideals of Christian knighthood and became one of the most frequently depicted scenes in medieval and early modern art.

George’s cult spread throughout Christendom and beyond. He was numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers and invoked against plague and various diseases of the skin. As a military saint he became patron of soldiers, knights, cavalry, and later of scouting organizations. England adopted him as national patron, a process linked to the Crusades, to the devotion of English kings, and especially to Edward III’s foundation of the Order of the Garter in the fourteenth century, which took Saint George’s cross as its badge. He is the principal patron saint of Georgia, and he is also patron or co-patron of Catalonia, Ethiopia, Portugal, Lithuania, Moscow, Genoa, Ferrara, Freiburg, Malta, Gozo, Beirut, Aragon, and many other cities and regions. His principal feast is 23 April in both Western and Eastern calendars (observed on 6 May in churches that follow the Julian calendar). In parts of the Islamic world, popular devotion has associated him with the mysterious figure of al-Khidr. Iconographically he is typically shown as a mounted warrior in armor, often transfixing a dragon with a lance, and bearing a white shield or banner charged with a red cross. Although the legendary overlay is extensive, the antiquity of his cult and the centrality of the Lydda shrine remain the most secure historical points of reference for Saint George.
