Biography

Short Description

Saint Gerlach, known in Dutch as Gerlachus van Houthem and sometimes called Gerlach of Valkenburg, was a twelfth-century hermit of the Limburg region in the Low Countries. The principal account of his life is a Latin vita written in the early thirteenth century, roughly a generation after his death, and later tradition depends heavily on that text and on local devotion. According to this hagiographical tradition he was born of a knightly or noble family at Valkenburg. In youth and early adulthood he followed the career of a warrior and lived in a worldly fashion. The same tradition states that he was married and that the death of his wife became the occasion of a sharp conversion of life. No reliable source records a precise year of birth, and even the year of his death is reported with variation in later calendars and compilations.

After his conversion Gerlach undertook long penitential pilgrimages. He is said to have gone first to Rome and then to the Holy Land, remaining for a number of years in Jerusalem in austerity and in service to the poor or the sick. These journeys belong to the common pattern of twelfth-century knightly repentance and cannot be dated with exactness. Upon his return to Limburg he renounced his property and chose the eremitical life at Houthem, not far from his native Valkenburg. The most famous feature of his legend is that he made his dwelling in the hollow trunk of an oak tree. There he practiced fasting, vigils, and manual work, and he became known for almsgiving. A recurring story tells that he used a donkey to carry grain to be milled or baked, often in connection with Aachen, and distributed bread to the needy. Local church authorities eventually intervened: the oak was cut down, whether from suspicion of irregularity or from the press of visitors, and Gerlach thereafter lived in a cell. He accepted the spiritual oversight of nearby clergy, commonly identified with Premonstratensian canons, and thus his solitude was brought within the pastoral structures of the diocese of Liège.

Gerlach died in the later twelfth century. 5 January is the traditional date of death and remains his feast day, while the year is variously given in the neighborhood of 1170. He was buried at Houthem. A church rose over the tomb, and in the thirteenth century a Premonstratensian convent dedicated to him was founded there, which helped to stabilize and spread his cult. Relics associated with him have been kept at Houthem, in the later parish church of Saint Gerlach. He was not canonized by a formal papal process of the kind that became standard in later centuries; his sanctity was of the older type, resting on local reputation, liturgical commemoration, and episcopal or popular recognition. In art he is typically shown as a hermit with an oak, sometimes with a donkey or with attributes of penance.

Devotion to Saint Gerlach has remained especially strong in southern Limburg. He is regarded as patron of Houthem, and folk practice has long invoked him in connection with the health of cattle and against livestock disease, a patronage that fits a rural shrine and the healing legends attached to his grave and well. Historical knowledge of the man himself is limited: beyond the outline of knight, widower, pilgrim, and hermit, almost every picturesque detail derives from a single medieval life and from subsequent folklore. Even so, that outline is consistent with well-attested patterns of lay conversion and eremitism in the twelfth-century Low Countries, and the continuity of his cult at Houthem is a matter of local religious history rather than of later invention.
