Biography

Short Description

Saint Grwst, whose name also appears in the forms Gwrwst, Gorwst, and Grwst the Confessor, belongs to the large company of poorly documented holy men of early medieval Wales. He is generally assigned to the sixth or seventh century, the so-called Age of Saints, but no contemporary record of his life survives. Knowledge of him rests almost entirely on the place-name Llanrwst, on a later church dedication, and on scattered notices in medieval Welsh genealogies. There is no extant vita, no early martyrological entry of any length, and no charter or inscription that can be tied to him with certainty. As a result, any account of his career must remain provisional and must distinguish carefully between local tradition and verifiable fact.

The strongest evidence for his cult is topographic. Llanrwst, a town in the Conwy valley in what is now Conwy County Borough in North Wales, takes its name from the Welsh elements llan, meaning a church or consecrated enclosure, and Grwst. The parish church of Saint Grwst, situated close to the River Conwy, preserves that dedication. Whether Grwst himself established a monastic cell or clas on the site, or whether a later community placed itself under his patronage, cannot be determined from surviving sources. The present church building is medieval and later, and it does not furnish archaeological proof of a sixth-century foundation, though the llan-name itself is consistent with an early medieval origin for the cult. Llanrwst became the principal, and apparently the only, centre of his veneration.

Later medieval genealogical collections sometimes attach Grwst to the lineage of Coel Hen, the legendary northern British ancestor. In one recension he is presented as the son of Gwaith Hengaer ap Elfin ap Urien, a pedigree that would, if taken at face value, connect him with the family of Urien of Rheged. Such tracts were compiled long after the sixth century and served dynastic and literary purposes as much as historical ones. They cannot be used as a reliable biography, but they do indicate that Welsh learned tradition regarded Grwst as a native Briton of aristocratic stock rather than as an immigrant missionary from Ireland or the Continent. He is occasionally given the epithet Confessor, a title used in insular hagiography for a saint who was not a martyr. A separate genealogical figure, Grwst Lledlwm, appears in Coeling pedigrees as a dynastic ancestor; whether that person is identical with the saint of Llanrwst is uncertain and should not be assumed.

Nothing certain is known of his manner of life, his possible companions, or the date and place of his death. He does not figure among the better-attested saints of Gwynedd such as Deiniol of Bangor, and he left no identifiable school of disciples. His feast has been kept on 1 December in some Welsh and post-medieval calendars. He is honoured as the patron saint of Llanrwst. Like nearly all Welsh saints of his era, he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization; his status as a saint reflects local and diocesan veneration of the pre-congregation period. The extreme poverty of the sources means that Grwst remains a figure known chiefly through the church and town that bear his name.
