Biography

Short Description

Saint Guinefort was not a human saint but a greyhound dog who became the focus of an unofficial folk cult in the Dombes region north of Lyon in east-central France. The principal contemporary source is the Dominican preacher and inquisitor Stephen of Bourbon (Étienne de Bourbon), who described the cult in the mid-thirteenth century in his treatise on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. According to that account, a knight of the diocese of Lyon left his infant in a cradle under the watch of the greyhound. A serpent approached the child; the dog fought and killed it, overturning the cradle and covering itself in blood. The knight, returning to a disordered nursery and a bloodstained hound, believed the dog had slain the child and killed it with his sword. He then found the infant unharmed and the dead snake, and understood that the animal had saved the child.

In remorse the knight cast the dog into a well near the castle, covered the body with stones, and planted trees about the place. Peasants of the district, hearing the story, treated Guinefort as a martyr who had died for the innocent. They brought ailing or weakly infants to the grove, made offerings, and performed rites that mixed Christian prayer with older customary practices, including leaving children overnight among the trees and passing them between trunks or over the well in hopes of healing or of exchanging a changeling for a healthy child. Stephen of Bourbon regarded the cult as superstition and idolatry. He reported that some of the rituals endangered the infants, had the trees felled, the dog’s bones disinterred and burned, and the shrine suppressed.

The Catholic Church never canonized or beatified Guinefort; the devotion remained entirely unofficial and was condemned as superstitious. Nonetheless local memory of the holy greyhound as a healer of children persisted in the Dombes for centuries. Modern historical work, especially that of Jean-Claude Schmitt, has identified the cult site with a wooded area near the village of Sandrans in what is now the Ain department. Ethnographic traces of the cult are attested into the nineteenth century and, in attenuated form, even later. No precise year of the dog’s birth or death can be established; the events belong to the early or mid-thirteenth century in the Lyon hinterland.

The Guinefort legend is a local realization of a widespread international tale type of the faithful hound wrongly killed after saving a child from a serpent or similar threat, a type also known in other European traditions. The cult itself is of interest to historians of popular religion because it shows how a local tragedy and a circulating folktale could be adapted into a healing shrine focused on infant welfare, a matter of acute concern in an age of high child mortality, and how such a shrine could survive repeated clerical attempts at suppression. Stephen of Bourbon’s report remains the main medieval witness; later scholarship has used it to study inquisitorial practice, folklore, and the social history of childhood in medieval France.
