Biography

Short Description

Saint Iakovos Tsalikis, widely known as Elder Iakovos of Evia, was born on 5 November 1920 in the Greek Orthodox village of Livisi in Asia Minor, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now Kayakoy in southwestern Turkey. His parents, Stavros and Theodora Tsalikis, raised him in a devout household steeped in the liturgical and fasting traditions of the Church. While still a small child he lived through the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the forced uprooting of the Greek population of the region. The family abandoned their ancestral home and, after a period of displacement as refugees, settled in northern Euboea (Evia) in Greece. Poverty, hard labor, and the insecurity typical of Asia Minor refugee communities marked his early years, yet those who later recorded his life recalled a boy of unusual prayerfulness who already felt a strong pull toward monasticism and spent long hours in church and in solitary prayer.

After completing his military service, Iakovos entered the historic Monastery of Saint David the Elder in the wooded hills of northern Euboea in the early 1950s. The monastery, which traces its origins to the sixteenth-century ascetic Saint David of Evia, had by then fallen into severe decline, with few monks and dilapidated buildings. He received the monastic tonsure, was ordained deacon and priest, and in time became abbot. Under his care the house was physically restored and its liturgical and ascetic life revived. Elder Iakovos combined strict fasting, long night vigils, and manual work with an open door to visitors. He was known for extreme humility, for considering himself the least of the brethren, and for a warm, simple manner that put farmers, intellectuals, and hierarchs equally at ease.

During the later decades of the twentieth century he became one of the best-known spiritual fathers in Greece. Pilgrims came in large numbers for confession, blessing, and counsel. Many testified to gifts of discernment and consolation, and numerous accounts of healings and other help were associated with his prayers both in life and after death. He was especially devoted to the Divine Liturgy, to the Mother of God, and to Saint David of Evia, whom he regarded as the true abbot of the monastery. He refused to judge those who came to him, insisted on the possibility of repentance for everyone, and often gave away whatever food or money he had. Chronic illness, including serious heart trouble and other ailments, accompanied him for years; he bore these sufferings without abandoning the reception of visitors or the cycle of monastic services.

Elder Iakovos reposed on 21 November 1991 at the Monastery of Saint David. He was buried there, and his tomb and relics soon became a focus of pilgrimage. On 27 November 2017 the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople formally numbered him among the saints of the Orthodox Church. His feast is kept on 22 November. He is remembered as a contemporary elder who transmitted the traditional Orthodox monastic ethos in a direct, pastoral way to a wide public in the late twentieth century, without seeking office or publicity, and whose monastery on Evia remains a living center of his veneration.
