Biography

Short Description

Saint Iliya Pecherskiy, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the Venerable Elijah (Iliya) of Murom of the Kiev Caves, is a monastic saint of Kievan Rus' whose relics lie in the Near Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Church tradition, firmly established by the early modern period, identifies him with Ilya Muromets, the foremost bogatyr of the East Slavic byliny. According to that tradition he came from Murom, or from the village of Karacharovo near Murom, in the northeastern lands of Rus'. No contemporary chronicle names him, and neither a birth year nor a precisely documented death year survives; he is placed by hagiography and by later study of the relics in the eleventh or twelfth century. The byliny tell that he sat without the use of his legs for thirty-three years until wandering pilgrims healed him and bestowed extraordinary strength, after which he took service under the prince of Kiev and fought steppe raiders and other enemies of the land.

Later tradition holds that, after a life of arms, he received the monastic tonsure at the Caves Monastery founded by Saint Anthony and Saint Theodosius, taking the name of the prophet Elijah. He ended his days as a monk in the caves rather than as a prince's retainer. His relics, long regarded as incorrupt, have been shown and venerated in the Near Caves (the Caves of Saint Anthony). They are those of a tall, powerfully built man. Forensic examination of the remains in the late twentieth century, undertaken by Ukrainian specialists, indicated a man of the eleventh or twelfth century who had suffered a spinal disorder compatible with prolonged immobility in youth and who bore injuries consistent with combat, including a wound that could have been fatal. These findings have been cited in church and popular writing as supporting the traditional identification, though they cannot by themselves prove that the cave-monk and the epic hero are the same historical person.

The fusion of the Pechersk monk with the bylina hero is not attested in the Primary Chronicle or other Kievan narrative sources of the period; it is a product of later piety and folklore, visible in texts and in the labelling of the relics from at least the seventeenth century onward. The Orthodox Church nonetheless commemorates him as a prepodobny, a venerable monk of the Caves, not as a bishop, patriarch, or pope. As a tonsured monk he lived under vows of celibacy; no historically documented spouse or children are attached to the saint. His principal feast is 19 December on the Julian calendar (1 January on the civil calendar). He is also remembered with the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Near Caves. In popular Orthodox devotion he is invoked as an intercessor for warriors and for the defence of the native land. Formal Western-style acts of beatification or a single named canonizer are not part of his dossier; veneration grew locally around the relics and was received into the wider Russian Orthodox calendar with the other saints of the Lavra.
