Biography

Short Description

Saint Isidora, also called Isidora of Tabenna or Isidora the Fool, was a Christian nun of the fourth century associated with the great Pachomian women’s monastery at Tabennisi (Tabenna) in the Thebaid of Egypt. Almost nothing can be verified about her birth, parentage, or early life; the only substantial ancient account is the brief narrative preserved by Palladius of Galatia in the Lausiac History, composed in the early fifth century on the basis of Egyptian monastic tradition. In that account she appears already as a sister of the Tabennesiot community, which had been organized under the rule of Saint Pachomius and, on the women’s side, under his sister Mary. Later hagiographical calendars commonly assign her death to about 365, but Palladius himself gives no year, and the date remains traditional rather than documentary. She is remembered as one of the earliest figures later classed among the “fools for Christ,” those who concealed holiness under an appearance of madness or simplicity.

According to Palladius, Isidora lived among some four hundred nuns yet occupied the lowest place in the house. She wore a rag on her head in place of the monastic cowl, took the most menial kitchen work, and never sat at the common table, contenting herself with crumbs and the rinsings of the pots. The other sisters treated her as insane: they insulted her, struck her, and made her a byword. She is described as never answering in anger and as persevering in this hidden life of abjection for many years. The story does not claim that she had taken a public vow of folly; rather, the community simply regarded her as deranged, and she accepted that role. No spouse or children are mentioned, and her manner of life in a Pachomian nunnery is that of a consecrated monastic.

Her sanctity was disclosed through a desert solitary named Pitiroum (also spelled Piteroum or Piteroum), who lived on Mount Porphyrites. Palladius relates that an angel told Pitiroum he would find a woman holier than himself in the Tabennesiot monastery. Obtaining leave to visit the strictly enclosed women’s house, he asked to see all the sisters. They assembled except Isidora, who remained in the kitchen. When she was finally brought in, Pitiroum fell at her feet and asked her blessing, addressing her as Amma Isidora. The nuns protested that she was mad; he replied that they were the ones who were mad, for she was the spiritual mother of them all. The sisters then confessed how they had abused her. Isidora made no show of triumph and asked their prayers. A few days later, unable to endure the sudden honour and the change in how she was treated, she left the monastery in secret. Palladius states that she was never found again, so that her later years, the place of her death, and her burial are unknown.

The episode was transmitted as an exemplum of hidden holiness and of the danger of despising the apparently worthless member of a community. Eastern Christian tradition came to commemorate her on 1 May; some Western listings give 10 May, but she does not occupy a prominent place in the general Roman calendar. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; her cult rests on monastic memory and insertion into synaxaria. No historically secure list of patronages is attached to her name. Modern interest in Isidora lies chiefly in her position near the beginning of the fool-for-Christ tradition and in the unusual survival, through Palladius, of a named woman of the early Pachomian federation whose vocation was precisely not office, learning, or public ascetic fame, but concealment.
