Biography

Short Description

Saint Kea (also known as Kay, Ke, or Quay; Latin Collivocus; Breton Kea) is a Brythonic Christian saint of the late fifth or early sixth century whose cult is attested by place-names and later medieval tradition in Devon, Cornwall, and Brittany. No contemporary record of his life survives. What is known comes from parish dedications, from a lost Latin vita summarized in the seventeenth century by the Breton hagiographer Albert Le Grand, and from Beunans Ke (The Life of Ke), an incomplete sixteenth-century Cornish-language saint’s play recovered in 2000. Modern historians treat the biographical narrative as legend shaped around a real early cult rather than as a verifiable itinerary. He belongs to the generation of British monastic founders who, in the decades after the end of Roman authority in Britain, are remembered as carrying Christianity westward and across the Channel into Armorica.

According to the traditional vita, Kea was a son of King Lleuddun Luyddog of Gododdin in Lothian, in the Hen Ogledd or “Old North,” the Brittonic-speaking region of what is now southern Scotland and northern England. He is said to have been made a bishop in North Britain and then to have resigned his see in order to live as a hermit and to found monasteries. The same cycle of stories sends him first into Wales and then into the West Country. At Landkey in north Devon a church and settlement preserve his name (from Cornish lann, an enclosed monastic site, plus Ke). From Devon he is said to have moved into Cornwall and settled in the parish still called Kea, on the River Fal south of Truro, a district that also contains the older church site of Old Kea.

Cornish tradition, given dramatic form in Beunans Ke, recounts a prolonged conflict with a local ruler named Teudar (Tewdwr), who seized the saint’s oxen and otherwise persecuted him. The episode belongs to a widespread pattern in Cornish hagiography, in which an incoming holy man is opposed by a tyrannical king. The play is unusual among surviving Cornish saint dramas in interweaving this local legend with an Arthurian narrative of King Arthur’s war against Modred, showing that Kea’s story continued to be adapted for Cornish audiences many centuries after the period in which he is supposed to have lived. An angelic command is then said to have sent him across the Channel.

In Brittany his name is preserved at Saint-Quay-Portrieux in Côtes-d’Armor; he is also associated in the Albert Le Grand tradition with a monastery at Cléder in Finistère, where that account locates his death. Churches, holy wells, and parish dedications in Devon, Cornwall, and northern Brittany are the principal historical evidence that a cult of Kea was established by the later Middle Ages. No reliable year of birth or death has been transmitted, and he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization; like most Celtic saints of his era, he belongs to the pre-congregational cultus. He is commemorated on 5 November. The historical Kea, if a single individual lies behind the dedications, is best understood as an early British monk-bishop whose memory was localized at a handful of western churches and then elaborated into a trans-Channel saint’s legend.
