Biography

Short Description

The name Saint Macaire is the French form of Latin Macarius (from Greek Makarios, meaning blessed) and belongs to several distinct figures in Christian hagiography. The Wikidata identifier Q3463958 cannot be matched from available historical and martyrological reference works to one fully documented individual with verifiable dates and places. In the Latin West the form Macaire appears in calendars, local cults, and toponyms, most often as a rendering of one of the fourth-century Egyptian desert fathers or of later medieval bishops and pilgrims who bore the same name. Medieval writers frequently conflated homonymous saints, transferred relics, and invented itineraries, so a careful account records the cult while leaving biographical fields blank rather than substituting an office-taking year, a legendary journey, or another Macarius’s life.

The two best-attested saints of this name are Macarius the Egyptian, also called Macarius the Great, a fourth-century monk of Scetis in Lower Egypt, and Macarius of Alexandria, a contemporary priest and ascetic. Macarius the Great is associated with the early development of eremitical and loosely cenobitic life in the Wadi Natrun; later collections of apophthegmata and a corpus of spiritual homilies circulated under his name, though modern scholarship generally treats the so-called Macarian homilies as a separate work, probably of Syrian origin. Macarius of Jerusalem, bishop in the first half of the fourth century, took part in the Council of Nicaea and is linked in tradition with the recovery of the relic of the True Cross during the visit of Helena. None of these well-known lives can be assigned to Q3463958 without external confirmation from sitelinks or a critical dossier.

A later medieval cult, especially strong in the Low Countries, honours an eastern cleric often called Macarius of Antioch or Macarius of Ghent, described as a bishop or pilgrim who died at Ghent in the early eleventh century and was invoked against plague. Local French dedications, including the Gironde town of Saint-Macaire, preserve legends of an eastern bishop who ended his days in Aquitaine; these accounts are generally regarded as legendary transfers of Jerusalem or Antioch traditions rather than independent historical records. Feast days attached to the various Macarii in East and West include, among others, 2 January, 15 January, 19 January, 1 April, 10 April, and 18 August, depending on the particular saint and the calendar in use. Patronages likewise vary by cult and cannot be listed for an unidentified entity.

Because of this multiplicity, claims of religious order, marital status, children, papal or patriarchal office, canonization or beatification by a named authority, and precise birth or death data cannot be verified for the specific subject requested. Coptic patriarchs of Alexandria named Macarius and Byzantine abbots such as Macarius of Pelecete add further homonyms in Eastern calendars. Hagiographical method therefore notes the existence of devotion to Saint Macaire in both East and West, cites century and region rather than invented precise dates, and declines to fill fields that would rest on guesswork. Unique identification of Q3463958 would require the corresponding encyclopedic sitelinks, which were not supplied.
