Biography

Short Description

Saint Malachy, known in Irish as Máel Máedóc Ua Morgair, was born in 1094 at Armagh in Ireland. His father, Mugrón Ua Morgair, was chief lector of Armagh, so the future archbishop grew up in a household tied to the city’s ecclesiastical schools. He was educated at Armagh, ordained priest by the reforming archbishop Cellach (Celsus), and spent a formative period under the ascetic Imar Ua hÁedacáin. From early in his ministry he belonged to the party that sought to align the Irish church with continental Latin practice: a territorial diocesan system, the Roman liturgy, and stricter discipline regarding clerical life and marriage law.

About 1123 he was made abbot of Bangor and set about restoring that ancient monastery after a long decline. In 1124 he was consecrated Bishop of Connor. When Cellach died in 1129, Malachy was designated to succeed him as Archbishop of Armagh and primate of Ireland. The succession was bitterly contested because Armagh had been treated for generations as a hereditary possession of the Clann Sinaich. Only after several years, with the backing of secular rulers and of the reformers, did he gain effective possession of the primatial see, commonly dated to about 1132–1134. Having secured a canonical line of succession, he resigned Armagh around 1136 or 1137 in favour of Gelasius and returned to the northeast as Bishop of Down, while remaining the leading figure of the Irish reform movement.

In 1139 he travelled to Rome, visiting Clairvaux on the way and forming a close friendship with Bernard of Clairvaux. Pope Innocent II received him, arranged for pallia for the Irish metropolitans, and named Malachy papal legate in Ireland. Malachy wished to remain at Clairvaux as a Cistercian, but the pope sent him home to continue the reform. On his return he promoted continental religious orders: Mellifont Abbey, founded in 1142 from Clairvaux, was the first Cistercian house in Ireland, and communities of Augustinian canons were established or restored under his influence. He worked to replace older Irish liturgical customs with the Roman rite and to give the Irish church a diocesan map in keeping with the synods of the early twelfth century.

In 1148 he set out again for Rome to obtain the pallium for the Irish archbishops. He fell ill at Clairvaux and died there on 2 November 1148, in the presence of Bernard, who afterwards wrote his Life. He was buried at Clairvaux Abbey. Pope Clement III canonized him in 1190, the first formal papal canonization of an Irish saint. His feast is kept on 3 November. A series of cryptic papal mottoes later circulated under his name as the Prophecy of the Popes; modern historical scholarship treats that text as a late sixteenth-century composition, not the work of the twelfth-century archbishop. Malachy’s historically secure legacy is that of a principal architect of the twelfth-century reform of the church in Ireland and of the introduction of the Cistercians to the island.
