Biography

Short Description

Saint Marcellina was a fourth-century Roman consecrated virgin and the elder sister of Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, and of Saint Satyrus. She was born in Trier (Augusta Treverorum), then an imperial residence in Roman Gaul, into a Christian family of the senatorial aristocracy. Her father, Ambrosius, served as praetorian prefect of Gaul. After his death the household—Marcellina, her mother, and her two brothers—settled in Rome, where the family had property and standing among the Christian elite of the city. Almost everything securely known of her life comes from the writings of Ambrose and from later notices dependent on them; independent contemporary documentation is lacking, and precise years of birth and death are not attested.

In Rome she embraced consecrated virginity. On Christmas Day, Pope Liberius conferred the veil upon her in a public rite at St. Peter’s Basilica, an occasion Ambrose later recalled, recording the pope’s exhortation to her. From then on she lived in a household of virgins in Rome, devoted to prayer, fasting, and charity. In 377 Ambrose dedicated to her his treatise De virginibus (On Virgins), composed at her request. He held up her perseverance as an example of the consecrated life, while also warning against excessive austerity, which implies that her own vigils and fasting were severe even by fourth-century standards. Consecrated virginity in this period was a public ecclesiastical state, distinct from later monastic orders; Marcellina is not recorded as belonging to any religious order in the later sense.

When Ambrose was elected bishop of Milan in 374, Marcellina remained closely tied to her brothers. She spent time in Milan as well as in Rome. After the death of Satyrus, who had managed the family’s affairs and assisted the new bishop, the surviving siblings were drawn still more closely together. The sources, almost entirely from Ambrose’s circle, present Marcellina as a private spiritual companion and intercessor rather than a public actor: she supported her brother’s episcopal ministry by prayer and example, not by office. Ambrose’s letters and treatises remain the principal witness to her character and way of life.

She died in Milan, according to later tradition near the end of the fourth century, and was buried in the basilica afterward known as Sant’Ambrogio, associated with the tombs of Ambrose and Satyrus. Her cult is ancient. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 17 July. Because the surviving evidence is so largely familial and hagiographical, many details of her later years cannot be independently verified; what is secure is her place in a prominent Christian family of the late Roman West, her public consecration by Pope Liberius, and the esteem in which her brother, one of the Latin Doctors of the Church, held her vocation.
