Biography

Short Description

Saint Marcouf, also known as Marculf, Marcoul, or Marcou, was a sixth-century abbot and missionary in northern Gaul, in the region that is now Normandy. Traditional accounts place his birth at Bayeux, in the territory of the Baiocasses, toward the end of the fifth century. Little that is strictly contemporary survives concerning his early years; the principal narrative of his life is a later hagiographical vita. According to that tradition he came of a respectable local family, received a Christian upbringing, and was drawn early to prayer and apostolic work. He is said to have been ordained to the priesthood and to have undertaken the evangelization of the Cotentin peninsula, a district that in the sixth century still retained strong pagan customs in its more remote coastal and marshland communities.

Marcouf established a monastic community at Nanteuil (Latin Nantus), on the eastern shore of the Cotentin, at the site of the later village that bears his name, Saint-Marcouf. There he served as abbot, combining the government of monks with itinerant preaching and the care of the sick. The vita attributes to him numerous healings, above all of scrofula (tuberculous swelling of the neck glands), the disease later called the king's evil. Frankish royalty appears in the legend: King Childebert I is said to have held the abbot in honour and to have favoured his foundation. The historical kernel is that a genuine monastic founder of the mid-sixth century left a durable cult in the diocese of Coutances.

He died at his monastery on 1 May, traditionally in the year 558, and was buried there. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage. In the ninth century, during the Viking raids that devastated the Norman coast, the relics were translated inland for safety and were eventually established at Corbeny in the Laonnois (modern Aisne). At Corbeny the shrine acquired a distinctive political and medical importance. After their coronation at Reims, the kings of France were accustomed to visit the relics of Saint Marcouf and then to exercise the royal touch, the claimed power to heal scrofula. Hagiographers presented this royal gift as a participation in the saint's own charism of healing. The practice continued into the early modern period and made Marcouf one of the saints most closely associated with the sacral character of the French monarchy.

Devotion to Saint Marcouf remained strong in Normandy and in the regions that housed his relics. His feast is kept on 1 May. He is invoked especially by those suffering from scrofula and other skin or glandular diseases. The coastal commune of Saint-Marcouf and the nearby Saint-Marcouf islands preserve his name. Although the surviving biography is late and legendary in many details, the cult itself is well attested in medieval liturgical books, in the translation of the relics, and in the long-standing link between the saint and the French royal healing rite. He was venerated as a saint from an early date by popular acclaim and liturgical observance, without a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type.
