Biography

Short Description

Saint Martial, known in Latin as Martialis and in French as Saint Martial de Limoges, was a Christian missionary of the third century and the first bishop of Limoges in Aquitaine, in what is now southwestern France. Almost nothing can be established about his origins, family, or early life from contemporary documents; no birth year or birthplace is recorded in reliable sources. The earliest substantial notice of him appears in the Historia Francorum of Gregory of Tours, composed in the late sixth century. Gregory states that during the reign of the emperor Decius (249-251) seven bishops were sent from Rome to preach in Gaul: Gatianus to Tours, Trophimus to Arles, Paul to Narbonne, Saturninus to Toulouse, Denis to Paris, Austremonius to Clermont, and Martial to Limoges. This testimony, written some three centuries after the events it describes, is the foundation of the historical picture of Martial as a mid-third-century evangelist rather than a first-century apostle.

Martial's episcopal see at Limoges became the center of a lasting Christian community in Aquitaine. Unlike several of the other missionaries named by Gregory, Martial is not described in the earliest sources as a martyr, and the circumstances and date of his death are unknown. Tradition holds that he died at Limoges and was buried there. In later centuries his tomb attracted pilgrims, and a Benedictine abbey, the Abbey of Saint-Martial, grew up around the shrine. The abbey became one of the great monastic houses of medieval France, a stop associated with the pilgrimage roads, and a renowned center of liturgical chant and manuscript illumination. The so-called Saint Martial school of the tenth and eleventh centuries produced important early polyphony and sequence hymns. After the French Revolution the abbey was suppressed and its buildings were largely demolished; relics attributed to the saint were transferred to other churches in Limoges, including the church of Saint-Michel-des-Lions.

From the tenth century onward a richly embroidered legendary vita transformed Martial into a figure of the apostolic age. The monk Adémar de Chabannes (died 1034), attached to the Limoges abbey, composed sermons, a life of the saint, and spurious conciliar documents in order to have Martial recognized as one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus, a companion of Saint Peter who had witnessed the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, and who had been sent to Gaul by Peter himself. In these legends Martial raises the dead, converts members of the Roman administration, and is associated with Saint Valerie of Limoges, a local martyr who after her beheading is said to have carried her own head to the bishop. Adémar's campaign included an attempt to have a council at Limoges in 1029 proclaim Martial an apostle; the effort met resistance and the forgeries were later exposed, but the apostolic legend had already taken root in liturgy and art. Modern historians reject the first-century dating and the apostolic claims as medieval inventions designed to enhance the prestige of the Limoges shrine.

Saint Martial's feast day is 30 June in the Roman Martyrology and in the calendars of the Latin Church. He is the patron saint of the city of Limoges and of the Limousin region. In art he is commonly represented as a bishop, sometimes holding a staff or a book, and sometimes in scenes of preaching or of miraculous raisings of the dead drawn from the medieval vita. Churches dedicated to him are found in France and in other countries that received his cult through pilgrimage and monastic networks. Although the historical Martial remains a shadowy third-century missionary known chiefly through Gregory of Tours, the combination of an early episcopal foundation, a powerful medieval abbey, and a vivid legendary cycle made him one of the most prominent saints of Aquitaine throughout the Middle Ages.
