Biography

Short Description

Saint Médéric (also known as Medericus, Merry, or Merri) was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the later Merovingian period, associated with Autun in Burgundy and with Paris. He was born at Autun in the seventh century. Medieval accounts of his life, which are the principal source for his biography and cannot be controlled by contemporary documents, present him as entering the monastery of Saint-Martin at Autun while still a boy. There he took up the monastic life with marked austerity. Saint-Martin of Autun was a prominent house in the region, and later tradition consistently treats Médéric as a monk of the Benedictine observance.

After many years in the community he was chosen abbot. Hagiographical tradition credits him with restoring discipline in a house that had fallen into relaxation, and with a reputation for holiness that drew crowds of visitors. Seeking greater solitude, he left the abbey together with a disciple named Frodulphe (also venerated as Saint Frodulf) and travelled toward Paris. He settled as a hermit in a cell beside a small chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, in a then-wooded suburb on the right bank of the Seine, in the area later occupied by the parish and church of Saint-Merri.

In his last years he is said to have suffered a painful illness, which the vitae describe him as bearing with patience. He died on 29 August, according to the date preserved in the martyrological tradition; the year commonly assigned is 700. He was buried in the chapel where he had lived. A church was later raised over his tomb and placed under his name. The present Gothic church of Saint-Merri in Paris stands on that site, and his relics were long venerated there. His cult remained essentially local, centred on Paris and on Autun.

He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his status as a saint rests on ancient liturgical veneration, and he appears in the Roman Martyrology on 29 August. Historical knowledge of his life is limited: beyond the outline of a monastic career at Autun, a withdrawal to a hermitage near Paris, and burial at the future Saint-Merri, the narrative details belong to later legend rather than to independently attested fact. He is remembered in French tradition under the names Médéric, Merry, and Merri.
