Biography

Short Description

Saint Mirin, also known as Mirren, Merinus, or Meadhran, was an Irish monk and missionary of the sixth and early seventh centuries whose cult became centred on Paisley in Renfrewshire, in the west of Scotland. No contemporary Life or charter survives, and almost everything that can be said about him rests on later medieval tradition, on dedications and place-names, and on the liturgical office printed in the Aberdeen Breviary in the early sixteenth century. He is consistently described as a disciple of Saint Comgall at Bangor Abbey in County Down, one of the chief monasteries of the early Irish church, and as a contemporary of Saint Columba of Iona. Tradition further holds that he was of noble Irish parentage and that he served as prior of Bangor before leaving Ireland for missionary work across the sea.

The received account is that Mirin crossed to western Scotland and preached in the region of the River Clyde. He is credited with founding a church and monastic community at Paisley, on ground later occupied by the medieval abbey. Devotion to him was not confined to that single site: the largest island in Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin (from Innis Mirren, the island of Mirin), preserves his name and was associated with a chapel in his honour. Hagiographical tradition ascribes miracles to him, as is usual in the Lives of early Celtic saints, but such stories cannot be confirmed independently and belong to later pious narrative rather than to documented history. He is not recorded as a bishop; the sources present him solely as a monk and missionary, and there is no evidence of marriage or of children.

In the twelfth century Walter FitzAlan, High Steward of Scotland, founded a Cluniac priory at Paisley, subsequently raised to abbey rank, on or beside the site linked with Mirin. Paisley Abbey became the focus of his shrine and of local pilgrimage, and the burgh of Paisley grew in close connection with that house. His relics were venerated there in the Middle Ages. His feast has long been observed on 15 September. Formal papal canonization in the later, centralized sense is not recorded; like most saints of the early Irish and British churches, he entered the calendar by local cult and liturgical use rather than by a dated Roman process.

Modern veneration remains strongest in the town that grew around his memory. Saint Mirin is the patron saint of Paisley. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mirin in Paisley is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Paisley, erected in 1947. The professional football club St Mirren F.C., founded in the nineteenth century, takes its name from him. Precise years of birth and death are not established by contemporary documents; later writers have often assigned his death to about 620, but that figure is conventional rather than verified. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that an Irish monastic missionary of the Bangor tradition was remembered from an early date at Paisley, that his name attached itself to nearby sites such as Inchmurrin, and that his feast and patronage became a lasting part of the religious landscape of west-central Scotland.
