Biography

Short Description

Saint Modoald (also known as Modoaldus, Modowald, or Romoald) was a seventh-century bishop of Trier and a member of a prominent Austrasian aristocratic family later remembered for its close ties to the Pippinids. Later medieval tradition, repeated in early modern hagiographical collections, describes him as coming from a noble family of Aquitaine, but no contemporary document records his birthplace or the year of his birth, and modern historians treat both as unknown. He was the brother of Saint Itta (Ida) of Nivelles, who married Pepin of Landen, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, and of Saint Severa, who became an abbess. Through Itta he was uncle to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles and Saint Begga, and thus stood near the kin-group from which the Carolingian dynasty would later emerge. Nothing reliable is known of his education or of any office he held before the episcopate.

Modoald became bishop of Trier in the first third of the seventh century, in the reign of the Merovingian king Dagobert I. Episcopal catalogues commonly place the start of his pontificate around 626, though that year is not fixed by a surviving contemporary act. As bishop of a major Moselle see he belonged to the circle of Austrasian prelates whose pastoral charge was bound up with influence at the royal court. Later tradition presents him as a counsellor of Dagobert and as a promoter of monastic life and clerical discipline in his diocese. He is associated with the church of Saint Symphorian at Trier, which became his burial church, and, through his sister Itta, with the monastic foundation at Nivelles. He was a diocesan bishop rather than a member of a religious order, and there is no reliable evidence that he was a pope, a patriarch, or the holder of any see other than Trier.

The year of his death is not given in a strictly contemporary source. Medieval and early modern catalogues vary, citing 640, 645, or 648; he is generally agreed to have died at Trier in the middle of the seventh century. He was buried in the church of Saint Symphorian outside the city. A local cult grew up around his tomb. In the High Middle Ages his relics drew wider notice: in the early twelfth century relics of Saint Modoald were taken from Trier to the Benedictine abbey of Helmarshausen, for which a well-known reliquary was made. His feast is kept on 12 May. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; veneration of him belongs to the large class of early medieval bishops honoured as saints by diocesan and popular tradition before the age of centralized canonization processes.

Because the evidence is late and in part hagiographical, many details of Modoald’s life remain uncertain. No authentic record names a wife or children, and nothing secure can be said of patronages attached to him beyond his own church and city. He is remembered chiefly as a holy bishop of Trier and as a kinsman of the Pippinid saints of Nivelles.
