Biography

Short Description

Saint Munn, also known as Saint Mund, Munna, or Munnu, is an early medieval saint venerated in both Ireland and western Scotland. He is generally identified by historians and hagiographers with Fintan Munnu (Irish: Fionntan Munnu), abbot and founder of the monastery of Tech Munnu, now Taghmon in County Wexford. The name Munnu is a hypocoristic or pet-form of Fintan. Genealogical traditions about his family are not wholly consistent: some Irish sources call him a son of Tulchán (or Telchán) and associate him with northern kindreds, while other accounts link him to Munster lineages. No reliable source records his birthplace or the year of his birth. He belongs to the generation of Irish monastic founders active in the late sixth and early seventh centuries.

According to the Latin Life of Saint Fintan, he received his early formation in the Irish monastic schools, with later tradition connecting him to teachers such as Sinell of Cleenish on Lough Erne. He is said to have gone to Iona seeking to join the community of Saint Columba. Hagiographical narrative relates that Columba, warned by a vision or prophecy, would not receive him as a permanent member of the Iona familia, foretelling that Fintan was destined to found his own monastery in Ireland and that he would bear the trial of leprosy. Whether or not the Iona episode is historical, it expresses the close links between the Columban network and other Irish houses of the period.

Fintan Munnu established his principal monastery at Tech Munnu in what is now County Wexford, probably around the turn of the seventh century. He became known as a strict ascetic and as a figure in the paschal controversy that divided the Irish churches. Later accounts present him as a leading spokesman for the older Irish reckoning of Easter against advocates of the Roman calculation, and he is associated with a synod at which the two parties confronted one another. The same traditions emphasize his patience under the affliction of leprosy, which he is said to have accepted as a share in Christ's sufferings and which did not prevent him from governing his community. The Irish annals record the death of Fintan, son of Tulchán, abbot of Tech Munnu, in the mid-630s, conventionally dated to 635. His feast is kept on 21 October.

In Scotland, Saint Munn is the titular of the church and parish of Kilmun (from Gaelic Cill Mhunna, Munn's church) on the Holy Loch in Cowal, Argyll. Medieval and later tradition held that the saint had founded or inspired a religious site there, and the dedication is one of a number of early Gaelic church names on the western seaboard that point to Irish monastic influence. Kilmun later became closely associated with the Campbell family, whose chiefs were buried at the collegiate church on the site, but the original cult is that of the Irish saint. Whether Munn himself resided for a time in Cowal, or whether the dedication was carried by later devotees of Tech Munnu, cannot be established from contemporary evidence. Devotion to Saint Munn thus belongs to the shared religious culture of the Gaelic world spanning Ireland and the west of Scotland in the early Middle Ages.
