Biography

Short Description

Saint Nazarius, venerated as an abbot in the Catholic tradition, lived in the fifth century and is identified as the fourteenth successor of Saint Honoratus as abbot of the monastery of Lérins. According to the accounts that have come down through monastic tradition, he was born in the city of Rome to parents of noble status. In an age when aristocratic families often pursued careers in imperial administration or the military, Nazarius instead chose the path of monastic withdrawal. He entered the community on the island of Saint-Honorat, one of the Lérins islands in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Provence.

The Abbey of Lérins had been founded by Honoratus of Arles circa 410 on an island previously uninhabited except for a few hermits. Within a few decades it had become a major spiritual and intellectual center, attracting recruits from across Gaul and Italy and sending forth bishops such as Hilary of Arles, Lupus of Troyes, and Eucherius of Lyon. Nazarius’s election as the fourteenth abbot placed him in this distinguished lineage. While no detailed chronicle of his abbacy exists, the community is known to have maintained its observance and its influence during the turbulent decades of the mid-fifth century, when barbarian kingdoms were establishing themselves in former Roman provinces.

Later legends ascribe to Nazarius a role in the evangelization of Corsica, claiming that he converted numerous inhabitants from paganism to Christianity. Such stories cannot be confirmed from sources contemporary with the saint, yet they illustrate the missionary ethos associated with Lérins. Nazarius is traditionally held to have died in the year 450, most probably at the monastery itself. No reliable information survives concerning the place of his burial, though it would have been customary for an abbot to be interred within the monastic precincts.

The memory of Saint Nazarius was preserved in the liturgical calendars of the region. The Roman Martyrology records his feast on 18 November with the simple notice of his abbacy at Lérins. He does not appear to have acquired a widespread popular cult or specific patronages beyond the monastic family of Lérins. As with many figures of early Western monasticism, the historical Nazarius remains somewhat elusive; the few facts that can be stated with reasonable confidence are his Roman origin, his membership in the Lérins community, his service as its abbot, and his commemoration as a saint in the ancient martyrologies. His life belongs to the larger story of how monasticism took root and flourished in fifth-century Gaul.
