Biography

Short Description

Saint Nino, also known as Nina or Nune, is the woman credited with converting the Kingdom of Iberia, corresponding to eastern Georgia or Kartli, to Christianity in the fourth century. The earliest surviving account of the conversion does not name her. In his Ecclesiastical History, completed in the first years of the fifth century, Rufinus of Aquileia reported that Iberia received the Christian faith through a captive Christian woman whose prayers and miracles, including the healing of a queen and the deliverance of a king lost in darkness, led the royal house to accept baptism and to send to the Emperor Constantine for clergy. Rufinus stated that he learned this from Bacurius, an Iberian of royal blood then serving the Roman Empire. Later Georgian and Armenian traditions identify this woman as Nino in Georgian or Nune in Armenian and supply a fuller legendary biography. Precise years of birth and death are not independently attested; later tradition places her activity in the early to mid fourth century.

According to the principal Georgian hagiographical sources, especially the Conversion of Kartli and the Life of Saint Nino, she was born in Cappadocia to a Christian family. These texts, whose surviving forms date from several centuries after the events they describe, give her parents as Zabulon and Sosana and connect her, in varying ways, with Jerusalem and with other holy figures of the age; such genealogical details belong to pious tradition rather than to independently verifiable history. Different strands of the legend send her from Cappadocia or Jerusalem through Armenia, where Armenian sources associate her with the companions of Hripsime, into the Caucasus. What can be said with greater confidence is that a Christian woman of foreign origin was active as a preacher and wonder-worker in Iberia during the reign of King Mirian III, whose long rule spanned the early and mid fourth century. The Georgian vitae present her as a consecrated virgin missionary rather than as a wife or mother.

Georgian tradition holds that Nino entered Kartli carrying a cross made of vine branches bound with her own hair, a relic still central to Georgian Christian identity. She is said to have settled near Mtskheta, the old royal capital, living a life of prayer and attracting hearers by her preaching and by healings. Queen Nana's conversion is placed first; King Mirian's followed after a hunting expedition on which, according to the story, daylight failed and the king, in terror, invoked the God of Nino and was restored to light. The conversion of the monarch is conventionally dated to the 320s or 330s, after which Christianity became the religion of the Iberian court. Clergy were requested from the Roman Empire, churches were founded, and a wooden church at Mtskheta stood at the origin of the later Svetitskhoveli tradition associated with Christ's robe. Nino continued to preach beyond the immediate royal circle, including among mountain peoples of the region.

In later life she withdrew toward Kakheti in eastern Georgia and died at Bodbe. King Mirian is said to have wished to translate her body to Mtskheta, but the hagiographies relate that it could not be moved, and a church was therefore raised over her grave. The monastery of Bodbe, rebuilt in subsequent centuries, remains the principal shrine of her cult and a major pilgrimage site of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Nino is venerated as Equal to the Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia. Her chief feast is kept on 14 January, with a further commemoration of her arrival in Georgia on 1 June in the Georgian calendar. She was never the object of a medieval or modern papal canonization process; her sanctity rests on continuous local veneration from late antiquity and on her place in the Orthodox liturgical tradition. While many narrative particulars of her life cannot be confirmed outside the Georgian and Armenian vitae, the fourth-century Christianization of Iberia and the role of a captive woman missionary in that process are anchored in a near-contemporary Latin source and remain the historical core of her memory.
