Biography

Short Description

Saint Nonnus (also Nonnos; Greek: Νόννος) was a fifth-century Christian bishop, traditionally identified with the bishop of Edessa in Osroene who occupied that see in the middle of the century. He is venerated as a saint in East and West mainly because of his role in the widely read legend of the conversion of Pelagia of Antioch, a celebrated actress and courtesan who became a desert ascetic. Independent notices of a bishop named Nonnus at Edessa appear in Syriac chronicle tradition and in the setting of the Christological councils of the period. The identification of this historical prelate with the holy bishop of the Pelagia narrative is long-standing in the martyrologies, but it cannot be proved beyond doubt, and many personal details about the saint remain unknown.

According to the Chronicle of Edessa and related sources, Nonnus was installed as bishop of Edessa in 449 after Bishop Ibas was deposed at the Second Council of Ephesus. Ibas was restored after the Council of Chalcedon in 451, and Nonnus left the see until Ibas’s death in 457, after which Nonnus governed Edessa until his own death, dated in that chronicle tradition to 471. A bishop Nonnus of Edessa is associated with the Chalcedonian settlement. Edessa was then an important Christian centre of Syriac speech within the Eastern Roman Empire. Nothing reliable is known of Nonnus’s family, birthplace, or education. Hagiographical texts sometimes describe him as an Egyptian monk or as coming from the monastic world of the Thebaid before his elevation, a picture consistent with the common late-antique practice of choosing bishops from among monks, but those particulars belong to the legendary vita rather than to documentary history. Attempts to identify him with Nonnus of Panopolis, author of the Dionysiaca and of a poetic paraphrase of the Gospel of John, remain speculative and are not generally accepted as proven.

The Life of Saint Pelagia, extant in Greek and in numerous versions including Syriac and Latin, is the principal narrative source for Nonnus’s sanctity. It recounts that Nonnus, while attending a gathering of bishops at Antioch, saw Pelagia pass in great worldly splendour. Unlike his colleagues, who averted their eyes, he regarded her and afterwards wept that she should take more pains over the adornment of her body than he had taken over the adornment of his soul. After a night of prayer and a visionary dream, he preached the next day with such effect that Pelagia was converted, sought baptism, and later fled in disguise to live as an ascetic in a cell on the Mount of Olives, where she was recognised only after her death. The tale is a classic example of the late-antique penitent-courtesan genre and was meant to edify as much as to record events; any historical kernel cannot be isolated with confidence. In the story Nonnus appears as a model of episcopal compunction, pastoral courage, and spiritual discernment.

His cult is modest and closely bound to that of Pelagia. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 2 December at Edessa in Syria as the bishop by whose prayers Pelagia the penitent was converted to Christ; Eastern calendars likewise remember him, often on the same date. No authentic writings of his are preserved, no tomb or major shrine is securely attested, and he is not associated with a documented list of patronages. Later tradition treated him as a monk-bishop of holy life. Because the sources mix chronicle notices for the see of Edessa with a popular conversion legend, many biographical particulars—including his origins, burial place, and the full course of his episcopate—remain uncertain. He is nonetheless retained in the calendars as a saint of the fifth-century church of Syria and northern Mesopotamia.
