Biography

Short Description

Saint Oda, also called Oda of Scotland and Oda of Brabant, is a Christian saint whose cult is centered in the Low Countries. Later medieval legend places her in the late seventh and early eighth centuries and identifies her as a Scottish princess, the daughter of a king, who was born blind. No contemporary charter or chronicle confirms her existence, her royal origin, or any exact year of birth or death; the surviving accounts are hagiographical and were written well after the period in which she is said to have lived. She is nevertheless firmly associated with North Brabant, above all with the town of Sint-Oedenrode, whose name is explained as the clearing of Saint Oda.

According to the traditional story, Oda learned of miracles attributed to Saint Lambert, the bishop of Maastricht who had been murdered at Liège. She undertook a pilgrimage to his tomb and there recovered her sight. In thanksgiving she consecrated her virginity to God. Her father, unaware of or opposed to that vow, arranged a politically useful marriage, in some tellings with an English nobleman. Oda refused the match and fled. She left her homeland, crossed to the Continent, and sought a life of solitude. Crowds gathered wherever her holiness became known, so she moved from place to place until she found lasting seclusion.

That seclusion she found in a forest of Brabant. She made her dwelling in a woodland clearing. Local legend associates her with magpies: the birds are said to have screened her with twigs and leaves while she prayed, or to have carried away her veil and so shown her where to settle. She lived there as a hermitess until her death. Around the site a settlement grew, later called Sint-Oedenrode. Her relics were kept in the town and became the focus of a regional cult. In art she is often shown with a magpie, and sometimes in connection with the recovery of her sight at Liège.

Oda’s principal feast is kept on 27 November. She is the patron saint of Sint-Oedenrode. Popular devotion has also linked her with blindness and ailments of the eyes, in memory of her own cure, though that association is less formally fixed than her connection with the Brabant town. She belongs to the large number of early medieval holy women whose cults arose locally and were never the object of a papal canonization of the later, centralized type. Modern historians therefore treat the Scottish-princess narrative as unverified legend, while acknowledging that a hermitess named Oda, or a cult figure of that name, was important enough in Brabant for a town to take its name from her and for her feast to be observed there for centuries.
