Biography

Short Description

Saint Paris (Latin: Paris; Italian: San Paride), also known as Paris of Teano, was a bishop of Teano in Campania who is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. He is placed in the fourth century. No contemporary documents for his life survive. What is known rests on later hagiographical tradition, on the brief notice in the Roman Martyrology, and on the local cult at Teano. The Martyrology commemorates him on 5 August simply as bishop of Teano. Subsequent accounts identify him as a native of Athens who came to Italy as a Christian missionary and became the first bishop of Teanum Sidicinum, an important Sidicine and later Roman city on the Via Latina in northern Campania.

The principal legend attached to his name is a typical southern Italian episcopal foundation story. According to this tradition, the people of Teano were afflicted by a dragon or great serpent that dwelt in a cave and poisoned a well or spring with its breath, so that people and animals who drank the water died. Paris is said to have confronted the creature, overcome it by prayer and the sign of the cross, and restored the spring to purity. The miracle led to the conversion of the inhabitants and to his establishment as their bishop. A church and sanctuary known as San Paride ad Fontem (Saint Paris at the Spring), standing near Teano, has long been associated with the site of this event and with his reputation as a wonder-worker connected with water and deliverance from pestilence.

Local tradition places his death at Teano on 5 August 346 and his burial in the city. His relics have been preserved at Teano, and he is honoured as a principal patron of the town. The cathedral of Teano, dedicated chiefly to Saint John the Evangelist, has kept his memory and cult. Because he lived in late antiquity, long before the later medieval and modern processes of papal canonization, he was never canonized in the later juridical sense. His status as a saint rests on ancient popular and liturgical veneration, eventually registered in the martyrologies. His feast is kept on 5 August.

Little else can be verified. Nothing reliable is known of his family, education, or the precise chronology of his episcopate beyond the traditional fourth-century dating. The see of Teano is historically well attested in later centuries, and Paris stands at the head of its traditional list of bishops. Modern historians treat the dragon legend as folkloric and the Athenian origin as a conventional hagiographical motif, while accepting that an early bishop of this name was venerated at Teano and that his cult is of considerable antiquity in Campania.
