Biography

Short Description

Saint Paul of Obnora, also called Pavel Obnorsky or Paul of Komel, was a Russian Orthodox monk, hermit, and monastic founder of the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, counted among the disciples of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Almost everything known about him comes from later hagiographical tradition rather than from contemporary charters or chronicles. That tradition places his birth in Moscow in 1317. From youth he is said to have been drawn to the ascetic life. He entered the Monastery of the Holy Trinity founded by Sergius northeast of Moscow, received the monastic tonsure there, and lived for a long period under Sergius’s spiritual direction. The hesychastic and cenobitic ideals of that house shaped the later northern Russian monastic movement of which Paul became a representative.

After years of obedience at the Trinity monastery he sought a stricter eremitical life. With the blessing of his elder he left for the forests of the Russian North. The sources associate him with a period of wandering among the monastic settlements of the Vologda region, including contact with the circle of Saint Dionysius of Glushitsa. He eventually settled in the remote Komel forests along the Nurma River, a waterway in the basin of the Obnora, from which his epithet derives. According to his Life he lived for a time in the hollow of an ancient lime tree before building a cell. The hagiography describes a severe regime of prayer, fasting, and silence, and recounts that wild animals became accustomed to his presence. After many years of solitude, other monks began to gather around him.

In time a community took shape and a monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity was established on the Nurma. Tradition holds that Metropolitan Photius of Moscow granted a blessing or charter for the foundation. Paul organized the house on a cenobitic rule modeled on that of Saint Sergius, but he himself withdrew to a separate hermitage and appointed a disciple to serve as abbot, remaining the spiritual father of the brethren while continuing the eremitical life. The foundation, later known as the Pavlo-Obnorsky Monastery, became one of the notable houses of the so-called Northern Thebaid, the network of forest monasteries that spread from the disciples of Sergius across the Vologda and Belozersk lands. Another disciple of Sergius, Saint Sergius of Nurom, settled in the same district, and the two foundations belonged to the same northern monastic landscape.

Paul died on 10 January 1429 and was buried at his monastery. If the traditional birth year is accepted, he would have reached an extreme old age; the Life itself presents his longevity as remarkable, and the dates should be treated as hagiographical rather than as independently documented. Local veneration followed his death. His relics were later uncovered, and he was entered in the menologia of the Russian Church. His principal feast is kept on 10 January. The Pavlo-Obnorsky Monastery remained an important spiritual center in subsequent centuries, though like many northern houses it suffered in later periods of secularization and twentieth-century suppression. Saint Paul is remembered as a classic representative of Russian forest hermitage: a disciple of Sergius who carried the Trinity monastery’s spiritual tradition into the wilderness of the Vologda region and combined prolonged solitude with the eventual foundation of a coenobium.
