Biography

Short Description

Saint Paul of Xeropotamou (Greek: Παῦλος ὁ Ξηροποταμινός), also called Paul the Xeropotamite, is an Eastern Orthodox monastic saint traditionally honored as a founder of two of the twenty ruling monasteries of Mount Athos: the Monastery of Xeropotamou and the Monastery of Saint Paul (Agiou Pavlou). His life is known almost entirely from later Athonite hagiography and from the commemorative traditions of those houses, rather than from a contemporary biography. Modern historians treat the received Life with caution, because it combines an imperial genealogy belonging to the early ninth century with monastic foundations that are documented only in the tenth. The resulting chronological contradictions mean that the precise dates of his birth and death cannot be established from reliable sources, and even the identification of a single historical individual behind all the stories remains partly uncertain. What can be said with confidence is that a monk named Paul, associated with Xeropotamou, belonged to the formative period of organized Athonite monasticism and that his memory was firmly established in the liturgical calendar of the Orthodox Church.

According to the traditional account, he was born in Constantinople under the name Prokopios (Procopius) and was a son of the emperor Michael I Rangabe, who reigned briefly from 811 to 813. After Michael's deposition, the story continues, the young man received a distinguished education and later found favor at the court of Romanos I Lekapenos (920–944), who is said to have wished to marry him to a daughter and to advance him as a possible successor. The same narrative then has Prokopios refuse worldly honor, take the monastic name Paul, and withdraw to Mount Athos. Historians have long noted that a son of Michael I could not have been a young courtier more than a century later under Romanos I, and that Michael's sons were reported by Byzantine chroniclers to have been castrated after their father's fall. The imperial parentage is therefore generally regarded as a later legendary embellishment, of a kind often attached to Athonite founders in order to enhance the prestige of their monasteries. A more modest and historically plausible picture is that of a well-educated Constantinopolitan of the tenth century who left the capital for the Holy Mountain during the era when Saint Athanasius the Athonite was organizing the Great Lavra and when imperial patronage of Athos was increasing.

On Athos, Paul is said to have lived first as a hermit and then to have gathered disciples at the site of Xeropotamou, a name meaning dry torrent or dry river, in the southwestern part of the peninsula. Tradition ascribes to him the foundation or restoration of the monastery there, whose katholikon is dedicated to the Forty Holy Martyrs of Sebaste, sometimes linking the house to an earlier, legendary establishment under the fifth-century empress Pulcheria, which cannot be verified. In the middle of the tenth century Xeropotamou is attested in Athonite documentation as an existing community, which is consistent with a tenth-century founder even if it does not prove every detail of the Life. Later, according to the same tradition, Paul left Xeropotamou for a more remote western shore of the peninsula, where he established a further house dedicated originally to Saint George; this community became the Monastery of Saint Paul, taking its lasting name from the founder. A famous relic of the True Cross, still among the principal treasures of Xeropotamou, is said to have been given to him by the emperor, often named as Romanos, an endowment story typical of Athonite origin legends and not independently confirmed in imperial archives, though the monastery's possession of fragments of the Cross is historically real.

Paul is commemorated as a venerable monastic father (hosios) in the Eastern Orthodox Church, with his principal feast on 28 July. He was never a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and the hagiography presents him as a celibate monk who did not marry. No historically secure information survives about his exact place of burial; both Xeropotamou and the Monastery of Saint Paul have claimed connection with his relics and his tomb. Veneration of Paul remained essentially Athonite and Orthodox; there was no medieval papal canonization of the Western type. Icons customarily show him as an elderly monk, sometimes holding a scroll or associated with the relic of the Cross. Because almost every narrative particular—parentage, court career, imperial gifts, and even the unity of the two foundations under one man—rests on late monastic tradition rather than on contemporary chronicle or archival proof, a careful account must distinguish the well-attested cult and the tenth-century existence of Xeropotamou from the uncorroborated biographical details that later generations attached to his name.
