Biography

Short Description

Saint Petroc, whose name appears in medieval sources as Pedrog, Petrock, and Petrocus, was a British monastic founder and missionary of the sixth century, active in Dumnonia, the south-western peninsula of Britain later divided between Cornwall and Devon. Later hagiography, especially Latin Lives composed at Bodmin in the twelfth century, presents him as a son of Glywys, king of Glywysing in south Wales, who declined a royal inheritance in favour of the monastic life. After study in Ireland, then the chief school of Celtic Christianity, he is said to have crossed to the north Cornish coast and established a monastery at the mouth of the River Camel. That house gave its name to Padstow (Petrocstow, Petroc's place) and became the first centre of his cult and the mother church of a family of dependent settlements.

From Padstow his influence spread inland. Tradition credits him with a second major foundation at Bodmin, which by the later Anglo-Saxon period had overtaken Padstow as the principal seat of his community. The surviving Lives also send him to Rome and Jerusalem, place him for a time as a hermit, and attribute to him miracles typical of Celtic hagiography, including the taming of a wolf and dealings with local rulers. These episodes cannot be read as contemporary reportage; they show how medieval churches in Cornwall, Devon, Wales, and Brittany understood his sanctity. Church dedications to Petroc are especially numerous in Cornwall and Devon, among them Little Petherick, Newton St Petroc, Petrockstowe, South Brent, Lydford, and Dartmouth, and they occur as well in Wales and Brittany, a pattern that reflects travel along the western seaways.

According to the same tradition he died at a homestead called Treravel near Padstow, on 4 June, a date later fixed in calendars and conventionally assigned to the year 564, and was first buried at his monastery there. In the later Anglo-Saxon age his relics were translated to Bodmin, where a shrine was served by a college of canons and, after the Norman Conquest, by an Augustinian priory. In 1177 the relics were stolen and taken to the Abbey of Saint-Méen in Brittany; King Henry II intervened, they were recovered, and their return generated further liturgical commemoration. No sixth-century chronicle records his birth or death, so the year 564 remains traditional rather than independently documented, but the early medieval cult focused on Padstow and Bodmin is historically secure.

Petroc's principal feast is 4 June. He was honoured as a saint long before the papacy reserved canonization to itself, and his cult is therefore classed as pre-congregation. He is invoked as a patron of Cornwall and of Padstow and Bodmin, and he stands with Piran and Michael among the defining saints of Cornwall. The figure behind the legend is best understood as a sixth-century British abbot whose monasteries helped to shape the Christian landscape of Dumnonia and whose memory was preserved by the churches that claimed him as founder.
