Biography

Short Description

Saint Piatus, also known as Piat, Piaton, or Piato, is venerated as a missionary martyr of the late third century and as an apostle of the region of Tournai in Belgic Gaul. According to the traditional accounts preserved in later medieval passions and in the Roman Martyrology, he was a native of Benevento in southern Italy. Ordained a priest, he is said to have been dispatched from Rome to preach the Christian faith in northern Gaul. Some versions of the legend make him a companion of Saint Dionysius of Paris, one of the missionaries associated in later tradition with the evangelization of Gaul in the third century. No contemporary documents survive to confirm these details, and modern historians regard the written acta as largely legendary compositions of a much later date, shaped in part by the desire of local churches to claim an early apostolic founder. Claims that he was the first bishop of Tournai likewise belong to later legend; the historically attested episcopal see of Tournai is of later origin.

The sphere of his missionary activity is placed in and around Tournai, in what is now western Belgium, and in the neighboring districts of present-day northern France, including the area of Lille and Seclin. Tradition credits him with preaching among the local Gallo-Roman and Belgic population and with winning numerous converts. During the persecutions connected with the emperor Maximian, commonly dated in the hagiographical sources to about 286, Piatus was arrested for his Christian preaching. The legendary passion relates that he was put to death at Seclin, a short distance south of Lille. According to the most characteristic version of the story, the executioners struck off the upper part of his skull. A cephalophoric motif, comparable to that attached to Saint Denis, appears in some accounts, in which the martyr is described as carrying the severed portion of his head to the place of burial.

The cult of Saint Piatus took root early in Flanders and in the Franco-Belgian border country. His principal shrine is the collegiate church of Saint-Piat at Seclin, which developed around the traditional place of his martyrdom and burial. Relics attributed to him were also preserved at Chartres, where a notable reliquary of Saint Piat formed part of the cathedral treasury, reflecting the medieval translation and division of relics. In the ninth century, during the Norman invasions of the Frankish lands, relics of the saint were moved for safety, a common pattern that helped to disseminate his cult beyond its original centre. He is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 1 October and has long been regarded as a patron of Tournai and of Seclin.

Although the historical kernel of his life cannot be reconstructed with certainty from surviving sources, the veneration of Piatus is of genuine antiquity in the diocese of Tournai and in the Lille region. Later medieval art and liturgy in northern France and the Low Countries repeatedly commemorated him as a founding missionary and martyr of that borderland. Critical hagiography distinguishes this enduring local cult from the legendary embellishments of the written passions, but does not thereby remove him from the religious history of the region, where his feast and shrine remained important through the Middle Ages and beyond.
