Biography

Short Description

Saint Placidus, also known as Placid, was a sixth-century Italian monk and one of the first disciples of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Nearly all that can be said of him with historical confidence derives from the second book of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great, written in the 590s. Gregory identifies Placidus as the son of the patrician Tertullus, who offered the boy to Benedict to be raised in the monastic life. The offering took place at Subiaco, where Benedict had gathered disciples before founding Monte Cassino. Gregory presents Placidus as a child of notable promise and as an early instance of the Benedictine child oblate.

The Dialogues record the celebrated miracle of Placidus's rescue from drowning. Sent to fetch water, the boy fell into a lake and was carried far from shore. Benedict, perceiving the danger in spirit, commanded the monk Maurus to save him. After receiving the abbot's blessing, Maurus ran upon the water as if it were dry land, seized Placidus by the hair, and brought him to safety. Only afterward did Maurus understand that he had walked on the water. Placidus said that he had seen the abbot's cowl above him and believed Benedict himself had pulled him out. The episode was told to display the fruit of obedience and the spiritual power of the abbot, and it became a favorite subject of later Benedictine art and instruction.

Apart from these Subiaco notices, the historical record is silent. Placidus is usually thought to have followed Benedict to Monte Cassino, but Gregory does not describe his adult life or his death. In the later Middle Ages, especially in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, a much fuller legend grew up, notably in texts connected with Peter the Deacon of Monte Cassino. According to that legend, Benedict sent Placidus to Sicily to found a monastery on family property near Messina. There Placidus, sometimes accompanied by a sister named Flavia and by brothers or companions, was said to have been martyred with some thirty monks by pirates or raiders, often under a leader called Manucha, in the mid-sixth century. Messina and other churches claimed relics, and the Roman Martyrology commemorated this group on 5 October. Modern hagiographical criticism treats the Sicilian abbacy, the family of martyrs, and any precise date of death as unhistorical medieval elaborations.

Within Benedictine memory Placidus nevertheless remained, together with Saint Maurus, the model of the faithful disciple and of the child formed by the Rule. His traditional feast on 5 October follows the martyrological legend rather than any independently verified date. Veneration was strongest in Benedictine houses and in Sicily, where the later acta had taken hold. For the historian, Placidus is a real sixth-century oblate known through Gregory, whose subsequent legendary expansion should be kept distinct from that limited but genuine core.
