Biography

Short Description

Saint Remigius (also known as Remi or Rémy) was a Gallo-Roman bishop of Reims whose episcopate spanned the late fifth and early sixth centuries, a period in which Roman Gaul was giving way to Frankish rule. He was born, according to the traditional chronology derived from later hagiography, in 437 at Cerny-en-Laonnois near Laon, in the former Roman province of Belgica Secunda. He belonged to a prominent Gallo-Roman family: his father Emilius is described as a count of Laon and his mother as Saint Cilinia; his brother Principius became bishop of Soissons. Remigius received a classical education and was already known for learning and eloquence when, at about the age of twenty-two (around 459), he was chosen bishop of Reims. The youth of the elect was unusual, but the choice reflected the standing of his family and his personal reputation for holiness.

As bishop he worked to maintain and reorganize Christian life in a region disrupted by the collapse of imperial administration and by the settlement of Germanic peoples. His most celebrated act was the baptism of Clovis I, king of the Salian Franks. Clovis’s Burgundian wife Clotilde was already a Nicene Christian and had long urged her husband to abandon paganism. Tradition holds that during a battle against the Alemanni at Tolbiac (commonly placed in the mid-490s) Clovis invoked Clotilde’s God and vowed conversion if he were granted victory. After the victory he received instruction from Remigius and was baptized, together with a large number of his warriors, at Reims, an event traditionally assigned to Christmas Day 496, though modern historians have also proposed dates in the late 490s or even 508. Remigius is said to have addressed the king with the words: “Humble yourself, Sicambrian; worship what you have burned, burn what you have worshipped.” The baptism aligned the Frankish monarchy with Nicene Catholicism rather than with the Arian Christianity then common among other Germanic kingdoms, and it became a foundational episode in the later self-understanding of the French church and monarchy.

Remigius remained bishop for an exceptionally long time—more than seventy years according to the traditional dates—and used that tenure to found parishes, churches, and monastic houses and to order the diocese of Reims. A testament attributed to him is generally accepted as authentic and records bequests to churches and the poor as well as arrangements for the clergy of Reims. He corresponded with other bishops and with the papacy and took part in the ecclesiastical politics of post-Roman Gaul. Later legend, especially as shaped in the ninth century by Archbishop Hincmar of Reims, added miraculous episodes, most famously the story of the Holy Ampulla: a dove said to have brought a vial of sacred oil for the baptism of Clovis. That ampulla later became central to the coronation ritual of French kings at Reims Cathedral.

Remigius died at Reims on 13 January 533 and was first buried in the church of Saint-Christophe. His relics were later translated, and the Abbey (now Basilica) of Saint-Remi grew up around his tomb as a major pilgrimage site. Veneration began soon after his death; he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. His principal feast in the Roman Martyrology is 13 January; in France he has also been celebrated on 1 October, the date of a translation of relics. He is remembered as the Apostle of the Franks, as patron of the city of Reims, and more broadly in association with France, whose royal and ecclesiastical identity was long tied to the baptism he administered to Clovis.
