Biography

Short Description

Saint Sabina is a Christian martyr of the second century whose cult is centered in Rome. According to the traditional Latin passio associated with her name, she was a noble Roman matron, the daughter of Herod Metallarius and the widow of a senator named Valentinus. She lived in Rome in the time of the Emperor Hadrian. The story of her conversion is inseparable from that of her servant Serapia (also called Seraphia), a Christian woman from Antioch in Syria who instructed her mistress in the faith. Through Serapia’s teaching and example Sabina was converted and received baptism. The passio presents her thereafter as a devout Christian of high social standing who remained in her household on the Aventine.

When Serapia’s Christianity was discovered, she was arrested, tortured, and beheaded. Sabina recovered the body of her servant and had it buried in the family sepulchre, an act of piety that revealed her own allegiance. She was denounced, brought before a prefect named Elpidius, and, remaining steadfast in her confession of Christ, was condemned and put to death. Later tradition places her martyrdom in Rome in 125 or 126. The same account states that the two women were laid in the same tomb. These narrative details—the names of her father and husband, the prefect, and the precise year—derive from the passio and cannot be confirmed from independent contemporary sources.

Modern hagiographical scholarship regards the passio of Sabina and Serapia as a later legendary composition rather than a reliable historical record. What is historically secure is an early and important cult of a martyr named Sabina on the Aventine Hill. In the first third of the fifth century a priest named Peter of Illyria founded a basilica there dedicated to Saint Sabina, during the pontificate of Pope Celestine I (422–432). The Basilica of Santa Sabina still stands and is among the best-preserved fifth-century churches in Rome. Tradition holds that it occupies the site of her house or tomb; her relics were translated to the church. The building later became the stational church for Ash Wednesday in the Roman liturgy, a role it retains.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Saint Sabina on 29 August, a date she has long shared in the calendar with the Beheading of John the Baptist, on which she was observed as a commemoration. In some traditions she is joined with Saint Serapia, whose feast has also been kept on 29 August or on 3 September. She is venerated as a martyr in the Latin Church and is known in Eastern Christian calendars as well. Beyond the Roman cult attached to the Aventine basilica, little else about her life can be established with certainty. The core of her historical footprint is the ancient dedication of one of Rome’s principal early Christian monuments to a martyr of this name, around whom a fuller legendary biography subsequently grew.
