Biography

Short Description

Saint Saturninus, known in French as Saint Saturnin and in Occitan as Sant Sernin, was a third-century Christian missionary and the first bishop of Toulouse in Roman Gaul. The principal early witness to his mission is Gregory of Tours, who in the sixth century recorded that Saturninus was one of seven bishops sent from Rome to evangelize Gaul during the consulship of Decius and Gratus, around the year 250. His companions in that tradition included Denis of Paris, Trophimus of Arles, Paul of Narbonne, Gatianus of Tours, Austromoine of Clermont, and Martial of Limoges. The chief narrative of his life and death is the Latin Passio Saturnini, a hagiographical passion account composed in the fifth century. No contemporary document records his place or date of birth, and later claims that he was a native of Rome or of Greece cannot be verified from reliable sources.

According to the Passio, Saturninus established a small Christian community in Toulouse and celebrated the Eucharist in a modest church. The city remained a centre of pagan cult. His daily route to worship took him past the Capitol, a temple of the Roman gods. Pagan priests blamed the silence of their oracles on his refusal to honour the idols. They seized him and demanded that he offer sacrifice. When he refused, professing faith in Christ, they bound him by the feet to a bull and drove the animal down the steep steps of the Capitol. He was dragged through the streets until his skull was shattered and he died. The traditional date assigned to the martyrdom is 29 November 257, in the period associated with the emperors Valerian and Gallienus, though that precise year rests on later tradition rather than on a contemporary record.

Two Christian women recovered the body and gave it burial in a wooden coffin. In the fourth century a church was raised over the tomb. Bishop Exuperius of Toulouse later transferred the relics into a stone sarcophagus and built a more substantial basilica. The present Basilica of Saint-Sernin, begun in the eleventh century, is one of the great Romanesque pilgrimage churches on the routes to Santiago de Compostela and still houses the saint’s relics. His cult spread through southern Gaul and into the Iberian Peninsula. Later legend made him the teacher of Saint Fermin, who became associated with Pamplona and Amiens, and a church dedicated to San Cernin (Saturninus) became an important centre of devotion in Pamplona.

Saturninus is commemorated on 29 November in the Roman Martyrology and is the principal patron of the city of Toulouse. He was never Bishop of Rome and never held a patriarchal see. He belonged to no later religious order, and nothing reliable is known of any marriage or children. His veneration as a martyr-saint dates from late antiquity and long predates the formal papal processes of beatification and canonization.
