Biography

Short Description

Saint Totnan was a seventh-century Irish missionary deacon, venerated as a martyr together with Saint Kilian and Saint Colman. Reliable contemporary records of his life do not survive. What is known derives from later hagiography, especially the Passio of Saint Kilian and the traditions of the church of Würzburg. Those sources present Totnan as a native of Ireland who joined Kilian, described as a bishop, and Colman, a priest, in a small band of Irish peregrini who undertook a mission to the continent. Totnan’s office as deacon is consistently attested in the Würzburg legend and in later liturgical commemoration. Almost nothing can be established about his family, place of birth within Ireland, or early training.

The group is said to have reached Franconia in the later seventh century and to have made Würzburg the centre of their preaching among the East Franks. Tradition holds that they converted Duke Gozbert. A conflict then arose over Gozbert’s marriage to Geilana, portrayed as the widow of his brother and therefore within degrees forbidden by church law. Kilian demanded that the marriage be dissolved. While the duke was away, Geilana is reported to have had Kilian, Colman, and Totnan put to death by beheading. Würzburg tradition dates the martyrdom to 8 July 689. The exact year cannot be confirmed from independent seventh-century documents, but a late seventh-century Irish missionary presence and a subsequent martyr cult at Würzburg are accepted in historical scholarship on the Frankish church.

In the eighth century Bishop Burchard of Würzburg, working in association with Saint Boniface and with papal involvement linked to Pope Zachary, translated the relics of the three martyrs. A church was built over their burial place; that foundation developed into the Neumünster in Würzburg. The skulls of Kilian, Colman, and Totnan have long been preserved as principal relics of the city, associated with both the Neumünster and Würzburg Cathedral. Their feast on 8 July became a major local celebration, and the three saints are patrons of Würzburg and of its diocese.

Totnan himself left no writings and is not the subject of a separate medieval vita. He appears in art and liturgy as a deacon, often holding a book or the palm of martyrdom, and almost always in the company of Kilian and Colman. His cult is that of an early medieval martyr established by local veneration and episcopal translation of relics rather than by a later formal papal canonization. Outside Franconia he remains little known, and the details of his Irish origin, personal life, and individual missionary work cannot be recovered from surviving sources.
