Biography

Short Description

Saints Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers venerated throughout East and West as early Christian martyrs and wonderworking physicians. Later Greek and Latin passions, which are legendary in character and cannot be corroborated by contemporary records, present them as Arabs who practiced medicine in the Cilician seaport of Aegeae (Aegae) in the eastern Roman Empire. They became known as anargyroi, “the unmercenaries,” because they accepted no fees and ascribed every cure to Christ. Their charity and reputation for healings that joined bodily treatment with Christian exhortation made them conspicuous in a period of intermittent imperial pressure on the Church.

The same late passions relate that they were arrested in the reign of Diocletian. A prefect named Lysias is said to have inflicted a series of tortures—drowning, fire, stoning, and crucifixion—from which they were repeatedly delivered until they were finally beheaded. Some recensions add that three younger brothers, Anthimus, Leontius, and Euprepius, died with them. The conventional date of the martyrdom is about 287, though the great persecution associated with Diocletian did not open until 303 and the precise historical circumstances remain unverifiable. Tradition holds that their bodies were taken to Cyrrhus in Syria, where a shrine quickly became a pilgrimage centre.

Devotion spread rapidly around the Mediterranean. By the fifth and sixth centuries churches in their honour stood at Cyrrhus, Jerusalem, and Constantinople. The emperor Justinian I, who credited the saints with his own recovery from illness, rebuilt the sanctuary at Cyrrhus and founded further churches in the capital. In Rome, Pope Felix IV (526–530) converted a pagan temple in the Forum into the basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano, which still preserves relics associated with the twins. A cycle of miracle stories grew around their names; the most famous is the so-called miracle of the black leg, in which the saints replace a diseased limb with that of a recently deceased Ethiopian, an episode frequently illustrated in medieval and Renaissance art.

Because they healed without charge, Cosmas and Damian became the principal patron saints of physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, dentists, and the older craft of barber-surgery; they are also invoked against plague and hernia and as patrons of twins and of numerous Italian towns. In the Roman Catholic Church their feast is kept on 26 September. Eastern Orthodox calendars commemorate more than one pair of unmercenary saints of this name, most commonly on 1 November and 17 October. Although almost nothing about their earthly lives can be confirmed from sources of the third century, their cult illustrates the early Christian fusion of medical charity with the veneration of martyrs and has remained one of the most widespread physician-saint cults in Christendom.
