Biography

Short Description

Salvador Ferrandis Seguí was a Spanish diocesan priest of the Church of Orihuela who was killed at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and later beatified as a martyr. He was born on 15 October 1880 in Altea, a coastal town in the province of Alicante in southeastern Spain. Formed for the priesthood in the diocesan seminary of Orihuela, he was ordained and spent his ministry in that diocese. In the early twentieth century he became parish priest of the church of San Juan Bautista in the city of Alicante, an urban parish of some importance in the provincial capital.

As a secular priest during the Second Spanish Republic he continued ordinary pastoral work while the Church in Spain faced anticlerical laws, restrictions on education and public worship, and rising political tension. Local Catholic memory presents him as a pastor who remained with his parish rather than withdrawing when hostility toward the clergy intensified. He is not recorded as a member of a religious order; his life was that of a diocesan parish priest in the Valencian region.

The Civil War began in July 1936. In Republican-held Alicante, as in much of the Republican zone, militias and revolutionary committees unleashed a violent persecution of the Church. Churches were attacked and large numbers of priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed in the first weeks of the conflict. On 24 July 1936 Ferrandis Seguí was seized in Alicante and put to death. The Catholic Church regards him as having been killed in odium fidei, out of hatred for the faith, and numbers him among the clergy who would not abandon their priestly identity.

On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Saint Peter’s Square as one of a group of 233 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, a group associated chiefly with the ecclesiastical province of Valencia and neighboring sees, including Orihuela-Alicante. He has not been canonized. Veneration remains largely local, especially in Altea and Alicante, and he is commemorated among the blessed martyrs of the 1936 persecution, on the anniversary of his death and with the wider group of those beatified in 2001.
