Biography

Short Description

Salvador of Horta (Catalan: Salvador d'Horta; Spanish: Salvador de Horta) was a Catalan Franciscan lay brother of the sixteenth century, widely reputed in his own lifetime as a miracle worker, especially as a healer of the sick. He was born in December 1520 at Santa Coloma de Farners in Catalonia, then belonging to the Crown of Aragon under the Spanish Habsburgs. His family was of humble peasant circumstances, and he was left an orphan while still a child. Together with a sister he made his way to Barcelona, where he earned his living first as a shepherd and later as an apprentice and workman in a shoemaker's shop. Drawn to a life of poverty and prayer, he sought admission among the Observant Franciscans and was received as a lay brother at their convent in Barcelona around 1541. He was never ordained to the priesthood and remained a brother, occupying the lowest ranks of the community.

After his profession he was sent to various houses of the order in Catalonia. The longest and most celebrated period of his religious life was spent at the convent of Horta de Sant Joan, in the Terra Alta, from which his popular designation of Horta derives. There he served as cook, porter, and questor, going out to collect alms for the friars. Although he had little formal education, he became famous for holiness of life and for extraordinary charisms. Crowds of the infirm and of pilgrims from Catalonia and Aragon gathered at the convent, seeking cures which contemporary witnesses attributed to his prayers and to the sign of the cross. The influx disrupted the regular observance of the house, and his superiors therefore transferred him repeatedly in an effort to restore peace and to shield him from notoriety he did not seek. He spent time at Tortosa and Reus and was for a period sent as far as Madrid, before being assigned to Sardinia.

In his final years Salvador lived at the Observant Franciscan convent of Santa Maria di Gesù in Cagliari, capital of the Spanish-ruled Kingdom of Sardinia. He persevered in a life of austerity, manual work, and contemplation until his death in that city on 18 March 1567. He was buried in the convent church, which at once became a place of pilgrimage. In later centuries his relics were translated to the Church of Santa Rosalia in Cagliari, where they continue to be venerated. Reports of miracles at his tomb sustained a popular cult in Sardinia and in his native Catalonia.

The Church formally recognized this cult when Pope Paul V beatified Salvador in 1606. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI on 17 April 1938. His liturgical feast is observed on 18 March, the anniversary of his death. He remains especially linked with the town of Horta de Sant Joan and is invoked by the sick and by those who seek healing. His life is remembered as an example of Franciscan humility: a lay brother of obscure birth who, without office or learning, was believed by his contemporaries to have been a channel of divine favor.
