Biography

Salvador Valera Parra was a Roman Catholic diocesan priest of nineteenth-century Spain. He was born on 27 December 1816 in Huércal-Overa, in the province of Almería in Andalusia, and he died in the same town on 24 March 1889. He came from a modest family and was formed for the priesthood in the Diocese of Almería. After ordination he served as a secular priest, not as a member of a religious order. His ministry belonged to the rural and small-town world of eastern Andalusia, a region then marked by agricultural poverty, limited infrastructure, and the political and social instability of Spain across the nineteenth century. He did not rise to the episcopate or to any other high ecclesiastical office; the documented shape of his life is that of a parish priest identified with one locality.

Local tradition and later notices prepared in connection with his cause present him as a pastor of personal austerity, prayer, and practical charity. He is remembered for the ordinary work of a parish priest—celebration of the sacraments, preaching, confession, and care of the sick—and for sharing what he had with the poor. His piety is described in terms typical of Spanish parish Catholicism of his time, including Eucharistic and Marian devotion. He left no substantial body of published writings and played no prominent role in national church affairs. Surviving biographical material is relatively sparse; many secondary anecdotes cannot be independently corroborated, and even some basic career details, such as the full sequence of his assignments and the precise year of his ordination, are not securely established in widely available sources.

He died in Huércal-Overa in 1889. A reputation for holiness persisted among the faithful of his hometown and diocese, who have sometimes called him the holy priest of Huércal-Overa. His remains have been associated with the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in that town, which became a focus of local remembrance. In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries a formal cause for beatification was introduced. After diocesan inquiry and Roman examination of his life, Pope Francis recognized that Valera Parra had lived the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, and he received the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no feast in the General Roman Calendar. Devotion remains chiefly local, centered on Huércal-Overa and the Diocese of Almería.
