Biography

Short Description

Salvo D'Acquisto was born in Naples, Italy, on 15 October 1920, into a modest Neapolitan family. As a young man he chose service in the Carabinieri, the Italian national gendarmerie, enlisting in 1939. After training he was sent to Italian North Africa, where he served during the desert campaigns of the Second World War. Illness led to his repatriation to the Italian peninsula. By 1943 he held the rank of vice brigadier and was assigned to the Carabinieri station at Palidoro, a coastal locality on the Via Aurelia west of Rome, in the Kingdom of Italy then under the strain of war and imminent occupation.

The armistice of 8 September 1943 between Italy and the Allies left Italian units in disarray and opened central Italy to German occupation. In the Palidoro area, German troops inspecting abandoned Italian munitions suffered an accidental explosion on 22 September 1943 that killed two German soldiers and wounded others. In reprisal, the occupiers rounded up local civilians—commonly numbered at twenty-two men taken from nearby communities—and announced that they would be shot unless the person responsible for the blast was identified.

D'Acquisto, called to the scene as the local Carabinieri commander, understood that the explosion had been accidental and that the hostages were innocent. Faced with an imminent massacre, he claimed sole responsibility for having caused the blast, offering himself in place of the civilians. On 23 September 1943 German soldiers took him to the foot of the old coastal tower at Palidoro and executed him by firing squad. He was twenty-two years old. The hostages were released.

After the war his self-sacrifice became widely known in Italy and he was honoured as a national example of military duty and of laying down one's life for others. Barracks, schools, streets, and other public places were named after him, and a monument was raised at the site of the execution. The Catholic Church opened a cause for beatification, studying his death as a possible martyrdom of charity; he is commonly called a Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized. His story remains among the best-known cases of an individual Italian serviceman giving his life to save unarmed civilians during the German occupation of Italy.
