Biography

Short Description

Saint Crescentinus, known in Italian as San Crescentino or San Crescenziano, is a Christian martyr whose cult is concentrated in Umbria and the Marche of central Italy. Almost nothing about him can be established from contemporary historical documents. The principal narrative source is a medieval Passio, written centuries after the events it purports to describe and constructed from conventional hagiographical motifs. According to that tradition he was a soldier in the Roman army who converted to Christianity during the persecution associated with the emperor Diocletian. Rather than sacrifice to the gods of the imperial cult, he abandoned military service and left Rome.

The legend then places him in the upper Tiber valley. Near the site later called Pieve de’ Saddi, in the countryside of ancient Tifernum Tiberinum (modern Città di Castello), he is said to have slain a dragon that had been devouring people and livestock. Dragon-slaying is a widespread theme in late-antique and medieval saints’ lives and cannot be treated as historical fact; in the story it functions as a demonstration of power over evil and as an explanation for later local devotion. After this episode Crescentinus is described as preaching among the inhabitants of the district and converting many of them to Christianity.

Roman officials eventually arrested him. When he refused to recant, he was put to death by beheading. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 1 June and associates the martyrdom with Città di Castello. Relics identified as his have long been preserved in the cathedral of Urbino, of which he is the principal patron saint. He is also honored in Città di Castello, in the church of San Crescentino at Morra (where Luca Signorelli painted a well-known fresco cycle of his legend in the early sixteenth century), and in the Piedmontese town of Crescentino, which takes its name from him.

Because the written accounts are late and heavily stereotyped, a year of birth is unknown, and even the traditional dating of the death—placed by many compilers in the Diocletianic persecution, often around 303—cannot be independently verified. Dates such as 287 also appear in some compilations, underscoring the uncertainty. The historical kernel, if any exists, is that of a local martyr of the Tiber valley whose memory was later elaborated into the soldier-and-dragon legend familiar in medieval Italian devotion. His cult was of the pre-congregation type; no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized him.
