Biography

Short Description

San Davino Armeno, known in Latin as Davinus Armenus and in English as Saint Davinus of Lucca, was an Armenian Christian pilgrim of the eleventh century who died in the Tuscan city of Lucca and was thereafter venerated there as a saint. Almost nothing about his birth, family, or early life can be confirmed from contemporary documents. Later Lucchese tradition describes him as a member of the Armenian nobility who left his homeland to undertake a life of pilgrimage and penance. Armenia in this period was a Christian land with its own ancient church, and eastern pilgrims traveling through Italy toward Rome or Compostela were not uncommon, so the broad outline of an Armenian traveler dying in Tuscany is historically plausible even where the personal details remain legendary.

According to the traditional account, Davino first visited Jerusalem and the holy places associated with the life and passion of Christ. He then continued to Rome to venerate the tombs of the Apostles Peter and Paul. From Rome he set out for the shrine of Saint James the Greater at Santiago de Compostela. While passing through Tuscany he fell ill at Lucca. Local legend relates that he was received and cared for by a devout widow of the city. He died there, according to the same tradition, on 3 June 1050.

After his death a cult developed around his tomb. Reports of miracles led the people of Lucca to honor him as a saint. In the centuries that followed, his relics were preserved in Lucca, and his feast was kept on 3 June. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his recognition belongs to the era of popular and episcopal cults often termed pre-congregation. He is remembered as a pilgrim saint rather than as a bishop, a member of a religious order, or a martyr. His relics are associated with the church of San Michele in Foro in Lucca.

Historical scholarship treats the biographical particulars with caution. No independent Armenian record of this Davino has been identified in standard Western hagiographic surveys, and the narrative of his itinerary is known primarily through Lucchese liturgical and civic tradition. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that an Armenian pilgrim named Davino died in Lucca in the mid-eleventh century, that a cult formed around him there, and that he has continued to be commemorated in the local calendar of saints. His story illustrates both the mobility of medieval Christian pilgrims and the way Italian cities adopted and localized the memory of travelers from the Christian East.
