Biography

Short Description

San Guido, known in English as Saint Guy of Anderlecht and in other sources as Guido, Guidon, or Wye of Laken, is a locally venerated holy man of the medieval Low Countries. Almost everything recorded about him comes from a Latin vita written in the twelfth century, well after the lifetime it describes, together with the later liturgical and pilgrimage tradition attached to Anderlecht. That tradition places his birth in the tenth century at Anderlecht, then a small settlement in Brabant in Lower Lotharingia, within the Holy Roman Empire. He is presented as the child of poor and devout peasants, marked from youth by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and without inclination toward wealth or office.

As a young man he became sacristan of the church of Our Lady at Laeken, near Brussels. The legend describes a life of severe simplicity: he slept on the floor, gave away his small wages, and spent long hours in the church. A merchant is said to have persuaded him to put money into an overseas trading venture so that larger sums might be available for the poor. The ships were lost and the investment failed. Guy took the disaster as a rebuke for mixing himself in secular business, left his post, and became a pilgrim.

He is described as travelling first to Rome and then to the Holy Land. Later writers estimated these journeys at about seven years. When he returned to Brabant he was exhausted and ill. He reached Anderlecht and died there in 1012, according to the conventional chronology, and was buried in the village cemetery.

Miracles were soon reported at the grave. A chapel rose over the site and was in time replaced by a collegiate church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Guy, which remains the shrine and place of burial. A local cult was firmly established by the twelfth century; his name entered martyrologies and his feast was kept on 12 September. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the kind that became standard after the late twelfth century. Recognition rested on episcopal and popular cultus, later reflected in the Roman Martyrology.

Later devotion has invoked him as patron of Anderlecht, of sacristans, labourers, and bachelors, and as a protector against epilepsy, rabies, and disease among cattle and draught animals. No contemporary charter or independent chronicle mentions him, and the surviving life follows familiar hagiographic patterns: the poor layman, the failed worldly experiment, the long pilgrimage, and the wonder-working tomb. The historical kernel of his career cannot be separated with confidence from those conventions, but the cult at Anderlecht has been continuous and the collegiate church is still the centre of his memory.
