Biography

Short Description

Juan Jacobo Fernández was born on 25 July 1808 in Alcantarilla, in the Region of Murcia in southeastern Spain. Little is recorded of his family or childhood. As a young man he entered the Order of Friars Minor in the Recollect province of San Pedro de Alcántara, taking the habit as a lay brother rather than as a cleric. Lay brothers of that period were not ordained; they professed the same vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and devoted themselves to the material life of the convent—cooking, porter’s work, gardening, and the upkeep of the house.

After years of conventual life in Spain he was assigned to the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, which since the later Middle Ages had maintained friaries in Palestine and Syria for the care of the holy places and of local Catholic communities. He was posted to the convent of Saint Paul in Damascus, then a major city of the Ottoman Empire with Greek Orthodox, Melkite, Maronite, and Latin Christian minorities. There he continued as a coadjutor brother, serving especially in the kitchen and in the daily running of the small house that also served as a parish and a refuge for pilgrims.

In the summer of 1860, sectarian violence that had begun between Druze and Maronites in Mount Lebanon spread to Damascus. On 9 July armed bands entered the Christian quarters, killing thousands and destroying churches and houses. The Franciscan convent was stormed. Eight friars—six priests and two lay brothers, among them Juan Jacobo Fernández—together with three Maronite laymen of the Massabki family who had taken shelter there, were seized. They were pressed to abandon Christianity and refused. They were beaten, stabbed, and in some cases burned; the convent was looted and set on fire. Fernández died on 10 July 1860.

The eleven dead were at once regarded as martyrs by survivors and by the Franciscan Order. Their cause was examined in Rome, and on 10 October 1926 Pope Pius XI beatified them as the Martyrs of Damascus. After later recognition of a miracle attributed to their intercession, Pope Francis canonized them on 20 October 2024. The Catholic Church commemorates them on 10 July. Juan Jacobo Fernández is remembered as a humble Franciscan lay brother who remained at his post and died for the Christian faith in one of the gravest massacres of Christians in nineteenth-century Syria.
