Biography

Short Description

Janina Szymkowiak, known in religion as Sancja, was born on 10 July 1910 in the village of Możdżanów in Greater Poland, a region then under German imperial administration. She was the youngest of five children of Augustyn Szymkowiak and Maria (née Duchnowska) and was raised in a devout Catholic household. From an early age she was described as intelligent, modest, and cheerful, with a marked devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. After completing her secondary education she went to Poznań to continue her studies, including languages such as French, and for a time considered a career as a teacher.

In the 1930s she discerned a vocation to consecrated life and entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Sorrows, commonly called the Seraphic Sisters, in Poznań. She received the religious name Sancja and made her profession of vows later in that decade. The congregation’s apostolate included the education of children and care for the sick and the poor. Sister Sancja was remembered by her community for humility, generosity in ordinary duties, and a spirit of service.

The German occupation of Poland after 1939 brought severe hardship. The sisters’ convent in Poznań was requisitioned and they were subjected to forced labor. Sister Sancja was assigned to kitchen work. Because she knew French, German, and some English, she also served as a translator for Allied prisoners of war held in the area, especially British and French captives. She treated them with compassion, sharing what little she had and offering encouragement, despite the risks under the occupation.

Wartime privation, overwork, and poor nutrition undermined her health. She contracted tuberculosis, which she accepted with faith. She continued to work and to help others as long as her strength permitted. Sister Sancja died in Poznań on 29 August 1942 at the age of thirty-two. Those who had known her regarded her as a model of religious fidelity and charity in time of persecution.

Pope John Paul II beatified her on 18 August 2002 in Kraków during an apostolic visit to Poland. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 29 August, the anniversary of her death. She is venerated especially in Poland; she has not been assigned a widely documented list of specific patronages.
